I can't see why the same pole can not be used for a second dish. Some Sky installers are helpful and some are not.

The one who did the current setup may have been helpful - but went against the rules.

Last time they came out they refused to install one due to the trees behind my property. To clear the trees the height they'd need to be at they wasn't allowed to go to. Sadly i cannot cut down the trees either.

Just reading online that the older style EL010 LNB all 6 ports supported wideband. Does this mean that you can simply plug in one single box to any 2 ports, or does it mean you could in theory have 3 Sky Q boxes?

Yes that is correct they were known as "Smart LNBs" sadly no longer with us. Any port could be used for anything. If you see one advertised be very careful as they are very rare and often others are sold as this one.

Re: Sky Q - Shared Dish

An independent installer i know (ex Sky installer) claims to have one of those LNB's - for a price of course. I just wasn't sure a single LNB could supply multiple wideband feeds simulatenously.

But how do they propose to meet the strict statutory legal earth bonding requirements for any installation that electrically connects the satellite cables of multiple dwellings together?

Are they going to commision an electrician to install a suitable earth bonding wire in order to allow them to earth the mounting pole and the outer metal screens of all the coaxial cables that will be connected to that LNB?

Re: Sky Q - Shared Dish

Now that I'm aware of that I'm getting a quote to get a ground rod into the ground and strapped to the pole. That's what I was told to do by the installer.

If you overcome all the installation problems and Sky will connect to that set up, they may not as they cannot replace the LNB if it fails, just hope your neighbour never moves or the LNB fails and you can't get a replacement.

A simple way to connect an earth to the LNB and still allow the rain shield to be extended, if not all of the six outputs are going to be used, is to use a WF65 screw on F connector which has an M5 internal thread.

Re: Sky Q - Shared Dish

Adding another dish to the support pole of a dish that originates from a different electrical installation in another property may contravine elecrical regulations.

Re: Sky Q - Shared Dish

Correct. Getting your hands on one of these is the issue, me and my sky pals can't find them for love nor money.

Re: Sky Q - Shared Dish

Don't get bogged down with people mentioning earthing. I've seen 6 houses share an Octo lnb with no earth in sight, plus you're already sharing a dish....

Long story short. You can't get the lnb to support multiple Q boxes.

The existing dish is probably at the top of the pole to clear the trees so puting one underneath will probably be obstructed by the trees.

Any installation that connects to two or more individual residents properties immediately becomes a communal installation under the very clear statutory legal requirements of British Standard EN 50083.

"All relevant equipment must be Safety Earth Bonded in compliance with British Standard EN 50083. All coaxial outer connections must be permanently bonded to the building’s PME. It is the responsibility of the Contractor, and in particular the installing or servicing engineer, to ensure the system complies with all safety matters.

The system must be earthed, via a minimum 4mm2 Cable, taking into account the CAI Code of Practice on Earth Bonding and the requirement to maintain no more than a 5 Ohm loop resistance, to the Buildings PME.

The external Aerial Mount should also be connected to the installations earth."

Electrical regulations require that electrical installation be keep separate unless special earthing arrangements are made. A faulty on one installation could cause the adjacent earthing of the other to become live and dangerous. Carrying out any such installation that causes a death would result and has, in a charge of manslaughter.

Any suggestion that earthing requirements are somehow unnecessary because they've been ignored elsewhere is irresponsible and certainly not Sky's policy.
