Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Yeah mine started misbehaving as well. I reset the hub to default. No change. I did an nmap to my Sonos and Chromecast and first time nothing. After that they started showing as open. Weird. I then tired connecting via my app AND... Nothing! This is possibly a uPnp issue or some sort of intelligent traffic scanning. Maybe sky don't want you to run heavy streaming data on the hub that their sky box is plugged into? Anyway I've fixed my issue by plugging in a decent wap into one of the Ethernet ports and attaching EVERYTHING to that instead. Problem solved.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Hi I don't know if this helps narrowing down the issue but I found a workaround that at least allowed me to use my  hue lights,.  My setup as follows -  I had the same problem. Hue lights, Philips hub connecting ok but lights not responding in the hue app on my iPhone or HomeKit app if my main 2tb Q box is connected via cat6a wired (going via a netgear 24 port smart switch to the sky router). I also have 2 other sky mini boxes and a sky booster creating a mesh with 2.4GHz and 5ghz WiFi bands on.

I found if I set my 2tb Q box to WiFi connection (not wired) then the hue lights were detected and I could operate them fine. Trouble is the WiFi signal isn't great where my 2tb Q box is for running a mesh network so need it to be wired.
To resolve the issue I set up the main 2TB Q box as wired network, went in to the engineer menu on the Q box (highlight settings, type 001, press the ok button) went to network and turned off 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless (both must be off)  This then meant the Q box was receiving wired internet for streaming on the box but not transmitting a WiFi signal as part of the mesh network). I then made sure a WiFi booster or sky mini box was near to my room to provide sufficient WiFi signal - but the repeater must not be hard wired. With the 2.4 and 5 ghz bands both switched off on my main network wired Q box, hubs lights now work and respond  fine. So for my setup this issue seems to be as others described, how WiFi traffic is blocked between the bulbs and the hue bridge when being passed from a Q box WiFi signal through to a LAN wired connection.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Forgot to say in my previous long ramble - my sky mini boxes and wireless booster unit are not wired via cat6, I run these all as wireless connections with 2.4 and 5ghz switch on to make my aforementioned workaround work.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

cheers, this did the trick for me. Although I didn't disable the main Sky box as a wireless acess point, just changed it's own connection to the main Sky broadband router to be wireless and not wired.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

@Scott999 Which WAP did you use?

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

@vas1010bbcfghb mine is a dLink DIR842. It's a low ish end unit but not bad for the money. For my solution you can use any WAP though I suspect. As an update, I am now on full fibre and had even more issues with the new sky hub.  Using the WAP still solved it though and I didn't even have to reconfigure anything.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Okay thanks for replying so quickly @Scott999 . I did realise that the Hue system works fine if it's connected via my BT Mesh disc setup, but I don't like using them as they're so unreliable. Internet just drops randomly every now and again without any reason when I rely on them. I tried plugging the Hue hub in to a Poweline adapter but that resulted in the same issue. I might look  Side note: How fast is your full fibre? I can only dream of such things, the best I can get is 20-30Mb download and 2Mb upload. Hate it.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

@vas1010bbcfghb  np. I get about 100mbs on full fibre, as we live quite a distance from a town that's not bad.  On Google stadia I went from unplayable to just fine, but some other services seem terrible. If you have bad WiFi around your house and a large house or old wiring then you're always going to have problems with things like hue.  The only solution is to try different locations for your waps that you attach using Powerline and keeping the number of Powerline adapters down to a minimum. I have a point to point link on Powerline to take the signal from my router upstairs to a separate wap, and my upstairs smart lights attached to that wap. It can be difficult but it can be sorted with lots of trial and error.

Good luck.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Hi all,

I switched to Sky Broadband today, Sky TV, and received the two ethernet port Sky Q Hub.

I had it all ready in place to connect, as I run my networks via BT Whole Home Mesh, and Powerline adapters.

Once switched, I swapped them both to the Sky Q Hub, and they would not connect 😞

After some reading here, and just by trial and error, I got the ethernet ports to communicate, and all up and running now.

I achieved this by amending the Ethernet settings on the hub from Gigabyte to FastEthernet.  I then swapped them back and it is still working.  All very odd, seems the change reset something.

Hope that helps.

Stay safe and well. 🙂

@Bunnster most likely cause is the cable you were using was only partially wired Sky hubs require all 8 cores for gigabit speeds.

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

It's all working now on gigabit setting, with rj45 cables that came with bt whole home discs.

So that still a realistic issue?

Thanks anyway for reply. 👍

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

@Chrisee he says that he swapped them back again. I presume he means the setting. So it wouldn't be that. I think I had a similar situation when I was playing with this when I changed settings it worked for a while then stopped working again later...

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Hi all, yes, I switched back to gigabit setting, and the two ethernet ports are working fine.

I just have an issue now, as 1 port is connected to BT Whole Home wifi discs (I use this for a mesh, with wifi switched off on the Sky Q hub ER110), and when I do a speed test on those, I get the expected 75mbs download, and about 18mbs upload (Fibre To Cabinet).

The other ethernet port, is connected to my Solwise Powerline Adapters, I have had these for years, and worked fine with PlusNet router.  They are working, but when I test on my desktop PC (it has no Wifi) the speeds are less than 30mbs download, and about 8mbs upload).  They always were as quick as the wifi.

Not sure why the powerline adapters are slower, any ideas?  I have switched which ports the cables are in, and tried different cables.  My PlusNet set up has been in place for years, and I basically have just swapped the router to the new Sky Q Hub ER100 router.  Is the router 'managing' the powerline somehow?  Do I need to replace my powerlien adpaters, though as I say, worked fine before.

Any advice / help grealy appreciated.

Stay safe 🙂

Re: Sky Q Hub - ethernet port issues

Since your traffic is going to the internet through the router, the router is able to regulate the speed. Some do this on purpose (QoS) and it's a valid way of making sure that your home bandwidth is shared properly. Other proprietary routers could give priority to services that you don't expect though and restrict your ability to detect and manage these settings. What happens if you speed test device to device through the Powerline but not into the internet? Full speed I presume?
