RTE2 on Sky in Northern Ireland

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

A couple of quick questions if I may:

1: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE2 on their Sky box.

2: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE on the RTE Player?

I know often the football gets block - wondering if they are still doing so.

Thank you in advance.

@ozsat

I don't think the reciprocal cross border arrangements cover streaming, so RTE Player isn't available in NI or iPlayer in the Republic.  Broadcast reception is permitted and regulated because it's going to happen anyway, satellite footprints and aerial transmissions not being great respecters of national borders.

I don't know if it is still the case but VM and UTV Internet had a deal with RTE where their IP range was not blocked so their customers in NI had access.

I wondered if Sky signal was being blocked in NI still for football (and other programmes).

For 'channels', yes, because that's a legacy of 'cable television' being a pseudo-broadcast format, but I didn't think it applied to on-demand players.

The RTÉ Player has three versions: Ireland, Northern Ireland, and international. The RTÉ Player is not available on Sky in Northern Ireland or Great Britain.

However, you may be able to watch your programmes via the RTÉ Player website. The location of your device will determine the version you get.

You could also use a VPN to access the Ireland version.

I know that Doctor Who, that's on the BBC iPlayer in the UK, is in the Sky Store in Ireland at €4.99 per episode. (There's currently only "Eve of the Daleks" available). So maybe the Women's Euros will appear in the Sky Store for Northern Ireland if it's not available on RTÉ.

@Anonymous- my query was in regards to what exactly those in Northern Ireland are getting from RTE in Ireland and what is blocked. Not easy to set up as being in Northern Ireland even with a VPN.

Football is was easiest and most frequent thing available to check.

RTE said it was all on RTE2 and RTE Player - but made no mention if it was available to those in Northern Ireland.

You specifically asked these questions:

"1: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE2 on their Sky box.

2: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE on the RTE Player?"

and I answered as such. It not my or anyone's fault that you wanted more information and were unclear.

I know the RTÉ Player is not on Sky in the UK. I would highly suspect that there will be a restriction block on the Women's Euros on RTÉ as they are on BBC One / Two / iPlayer as well so I don't know why you would need to watch them on RTÉ or the RTÉ Player.

However, according to Pundit Arena, all Euro matches will be either on BBC One or BBC Two as well.

You can find the Women's Euro TV schedule at: https://www.live-footballontv.com/womens-euro-2022-on-tv.html which says which BBC channel it's on. All matches are on the BBC iPlayer as well.

Your original answer mentioned nothing of the football on RTE and Northern Ireland which both questions were specifically about.

Both your replies still do not answer my original two questions

"1: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE2 on their Sky box.

2: Are Northern Ireland based viewers able to watch the Women's Euros on RTE on the RTE Player?"

They are the only two questions I asked and require no further information!

I know those games are on BBC1 and BBC2 - but my question was specifically for RTE coverage in Northern Ireland.

I never asked in RTE Player was available on Sky!

I think a definiate answer would only be from somebody in Northern Ireland with normal access to RTE2 on Sky and RTE Player.

Thank you antman.

I was told that UTV Internet and VirginMedia Internet uses based in Northern Ireland were granded access to RTE Player based on their IP address - I wonder if this is still the case?

Must have been they were using a fixed IP range for those ISPs.

I did answer you, and I went above and beyond and provided an alternative. But clearly that wasn't enough. The Women's Euro are blocked on RTÉ in Northern Ireland. Watch them on BBC One, BBC Two or the BBC iPlayer.

I literally cannot be any clearer.

This is a Sky forum, not an RTÉ, Virgin Media or TG4 (etc.) forum, so why would you expect non-Sky related content here?

I didn't want an alternate - I would have asked if I did. I literally cannot be any clearer.

I didn't realise that asking if RTE football on Sky was working was not a Sky question.

I must have got confused as three of the letters (S K Y) are the same! As you have with TG4 which I never metioned either.
