Thats correct, you cancelled your subs and the ability to record content.

As @GD1 indicates, without a subscription a Sky+ box is a Freesat receiver, not a recorder.  In the past Sky have offered a 'Freesat from Sky' subscription product which enables recording, but putting the same amount of money on a 'real' Freesat recorder may well be preferable, particularly as that won't list all the unavailable Sky channels.
