How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

I have been posting for some tome now about my concerns for the quality of coverage of the new F1 season on Sky Glass.

I recently spoke to a Sky Viewer Relations representative about it and they tried to reassure me that it would all work just as we hoped it would.

Ironically, I haven't been able to watch any of this weeks test days, nor F1 P1 & P2 sessions, we have travelled to stay with our son and his family for a few days so I will be following everything watching on his Sky Q system.

So how has it been so far, are all of the following working as they should?

  • Watch from start
  • Uninterrupted streaming until the end
  • Allowance for a race or qualifying over-running
  • Not having to go into the live stream (thus knowing what has happened) in order to get ‘Watch from start’, there has to be a way to watch the coverage for the start WITHOUT seeing the live stream.
  • Playback of races in UHD (I’m pretty sure that last year UDH for qualifying and the race was only available live, I may be wrong)
  • Coverage available to view immediately, or very shortly after an event has finished, not hours later

I am hoping that it's all been seamless so far and we can all sit back and enjoy the season.

It would be interesting if F1 viewers could post their experience of F1 coverage this weekend, good or bad, and in particular to log and record any technical or viewing issues as I intend to feed them back to Sky in the near future.

BTW, Sky Q is not without its own problems, I have just watched P1 on playback and the programme just finished with >7 minutes to go, so I missed the last few minutes and the post practice roundup!

Also, I have just read on the Sky Q forum that apparently this year Sky is broadcasting some F1 coverage, including practice and the races in HDR, some users don’t believe it, some can’t see it, some say it’s extremely impressive… can someone please check and comment about whether they have the option to watch in HDR on Sky Glass?

I must congratulate people who are posting for their civilised and intelligent posts which are making very good points. Too many of these threads become useless due to people getting upset and it becomes a slanging match. As you can see those of us with Oracle and Superuser status are as confused as everyone else.

I have known @Mark-Br  for over 5 years and know that he regularly puts his neck on the line for forum members internally but in the end works for Sky so has to sometimes follow the company line in public.. The idea of closing the thread is sensible IF things are different from Bahrain as otherwise it gets confusing.

@joemit the practice and live races are indeed in HDR I have just watched Practice 2 live on both my Glass and via a puck feeding my C9 OLED. Both ran smoothly and looked great the HDR adds another deimension to the coverage especially under the lights. The stream had no glitches and no dropped frames something the pucks suffered from in the races year.

It doesnt appear that once the coverage finishes you can restart etc which is less than satisfactory. As yet I cannot find the UHD or HD coverage of yesterdays practice session. This is an area Sky are falling down on.  I suspect it maybe a rights issue so for people who need to timeshift sport Q is your only choice.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

Thanks @Chrisee for the feedback about HDR, that's good to know, I suspected that for some reason it might only be available on Sky Q.

The fact that yesterdays practice sessions still aren't available is a real concern for me, I am not always able to watch live but would definitely want the option to watch later on the same day, especially so I don't accidentally learn the results before I've had a chance to watch it.

Unfortunately if it is a rights issue that may be something that can't be fixed quickly.

I really do want Glass to work but as you point out, there is a part of me wishing I was still on Sky Q right now!

@joemit I was wrong both the recordings of Practice 1 & 2 In HD are available in my playlist. Thought I also marked the UHD coverage to add but will try again to exclude operator error.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

@Chrisee ah, good to know that the P1 & P2 were there after all, I need to withdraw my comment about P1 cutting off 7 minutes before the end of the programme on Sky Q, when I went back in to check them later I noticed that it said, 'Disk Full' and when I checked my son's Sky Q box it was indeed full so we have deleted some old stuff so that there is room to record the remainder of the weekends coverage.

I'd be interested to know if you are able to stream previous events in UHD, I may be wrong but I thought that last year UHD was only available live but not on playback, only HD, so I'd be delighted if playback is available in UHD AND HDR...

@joemit the disc issue with Q is a bit odd as the firmware is supposed to automatically delete watched recordings oldest first (unless marked as keep) if space is required. Last year Sky made a right pig's ear of F1 coverage on Glass but it is looking better this season 🤞

Certainly the pucks far from being hopeless as some forum members maintain mine are working well.

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

So I've just got home, hoping to watch the practice sessions and I can't find them anywhere on my Glass. I'm quite annoyed to be honest since they were all there in the nice collection they've put together and I dutifully added them all to my playlist earlier in the week in preparation to watch tonight. And nothing. Unbelievable. Am I missing something?

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

@joemit

Last year all the sessions that I playlisted were recorded in UHD, but sessions that were added to the playlist automatically, e.g. from earlier in the year before I got Glass, were only available in HD.

@DBKS did you add the showings to your playlist? If you did I found mine when I opened the playlist itself rather than on the Play Now rail. I have now added the UHD showings from the TV guide by scrolling down to the UHD channel which from memory is 3051 and clicking there.hopefully they will end up in the same playlist.

This year the UHD showings are broken up into the same bits as the main HD 406 channel. Not sure if Sky will vary the end times if the race overruns.

my puck is randomly stuttering in UHD for F1 even after a reboot. Happened yesterday as well so pretty annoying as it does look great

Another washed out sport now that F1 is shown in HDR.

Looking like I am going to have to move the puck to the living room and swap TVs around.

The Glass TV is just not good enough for HDR sport.

Has anyone else noticed if you fast forward through adverts, sound goes out of sync,if you leave go to another channel then back to f1 you were watching it then resents, quite annoying, however I think the picture on my sky glass is very good,in my opinion nice realistic colours!!

Re: How is the new F1 season going so far, any issues?

We had the series added, practices are available but just sat down to watch the qualifying and cannot find it anywhere. Generally Sky Glass has been fine for us but I find this inexcusable; It's just a matter of software engineering and Sky have had ~6 months to sort it.

And now I've just seen some of the result because it's listed in one of the menu screens as 'XXXX pips XXXX'. **bleep**ers.

@oellph go into the Playlist tile as that is where mine turned up not on the Play Now rail.

@Chrisee Nothing under Playlist ~ Sport. All we see is P3.  Nothing under Playlist ~ TV Shows.

Can't find it anywhere. So disappointed.
