Re: Epic subwoofer … sonic boom

A good question is ...

has anyone had their sky glass replaced and then seen (or heard) a massive improvement in the sound equality and bass output ?

watchhng that sky glass showcase, I can hear the surround sound effect, and I can hear some attempt at bass when the lady says "and now for the subwoofer"

but, it's no where even close to my cheaply soundbar.

id be interested to see if anyone is now happy they've had it replaced.

@roeboy

Well I've had the replacement 55" Sky Glass for a couple of days and, like the first one, no 'subwoofer' experience from the 'Sky Glass Showcase' demo and no LFE off the YouTube Dolby Atmos demo.

But, the Surround is an improvement and with the volume up quite loud, I was getting a bit of good Bass coming through from some UHD discs I was playing but nowhere near 'earth shattering' or room filling.

Looks like I'm going to have drop a grand on a proper Dolby Atmos Soundbar System to get the experience I was expecting from all the advertising hype.

Re: Epic subwoofer … sonic boom

@williamsands many thanks William what a disapointment. What I am gonna do is mount the Glass on a wall and see whether that makes any difference and I suppose I too could plug in my old sky soundbox. But the appeal was it was supposed to be all self-contained without the need for a soundbox, I certainly aint got funds to splash out on something fancy to plug that gap,

As I've observed elsewhere, it was never likely that the dimensions of the Glass enclosure (together with its construction material and the size/number/orientation of the individual drivers enclosed) were going to permit anything like Soundbox performance: the latter is really quite sophisticated.

@williamsands @roeboy

Acoustics of a room can vary quite dramatically depending on lots of things like how many soft furnishings you have, is your floor carpeted or wooden, are the walls plasterboard or brick?

All of these can affect how something sounds, especially when, with something like Glass, you can't position the speakers in any way to help bounce sound around.

Spending extra cash on a decent sound bar or speaker system kind of defeats the whole object of Glass being a one box system, but it really only is an improved version of TV speakers rather than a decent surround system.

But that really needs some depth: there are good reasons sub-woofers tend to be on the chunky side ; )

Re: Epic subwoofer … sonic boom

@fizzdisco

My living room has wooden floors and brick walls.

I know how actual surround sound with a decent sub woofer sounds from my 35 years experience  in the broadcast industry and the Sky Glass doesn't even come close unfortunately.

I like the integration of Sky service within the TV and the picture quality is rather nice but I guess I was expecting too much with the sound system so I'll spring for the extra equipment to give me a true Dolby Atmos experience..

Re: Epic subwoofer … sonic boom

I'm not expecting cinematic sound from the thing. The surround is fine but the bass appears non existent as does the sub woofer on the test. And switched bass boost on doesn't change a thing
