Package downgrade timing query

My 18 month sky q tv contract finishes on 5th October,  I contacted sky today as I want to remove the sky movies and sky sports from my package when my contract ends and so gave the 31 days notice today.

I was told that if I give the 31 days today I would have to pay a termination fee as I am still in contract.

I pointed out that the 31 days i'm giving ends on the 7th October which is after my contract finishes.

He still said if I don't want to pay the termination fee then I have to give the 31 days after my contract has finished, so the earliest I could give notice is the 5th October and then would have to carry on paying upto the 5th November!

Does that sound right as what i've been told just sounds wrong!

Thanks

By my reckoning 31 days notice end on October 8, but it depends on whether today is included in the 31 days.

Having to wait until 5 October is complete tosh.

The contract does allow a charge for removing premium services (not an early termination charge) - perhaps this is what they are referring to.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own
