How to talk to people in customer service

Hello, a couple of nice advices before you decides to call customer service because some of you have NO IDEA how things work and are, im sorry to say this, spoiled brats.

1 - Be polite, you have no idea who you’re talking to and they are a real person who has a life outside getting your tv/bb/mobile to work. They could go through stuff, keep it easy. Assume the worst so you can be as polite as it gets.

2 - You dont know what the issue is, say that you assume its this and let them do the job, if you know what the issue is, say it in a nice way and be cooperative. Don’t request things straight away. Thats not how things work.

3 - There is no magic button that can be pressed and all your issues get solved, wrap that around your head, saying “ i want it fixed NOW “ doesnt do much, they will do their best but if they say it can be done in a couple days or so, get over it, its not their fault, stop shouting and asking for impossible things to be done.

4 - Being polite goes a long way, you make someone’s day better and they go an extra mile for you and help you out. Shouting gets you nowhere and someone has to listen to you shout which is not worth any salary in the world.

5 - Answer questions that they ask you, do what they tell you, dont say ive done that or that wont help, people know better than you and are doing it to help you.

6 - Every call center in the world has a guideline on things, people follow rules just like any job ever, rules can or cannot be broken or avoided, if they cant break a rule because of you, its not personal, dont start acting like a diva and expect them to be your slave, they are not, you either do what needs to be done or dont call.

7 - Never say YOU DID THIS, when its the company’s fault. Just imagine calling someone, speaking to them for the first time when they have no clue what your case is and you’re saying : “ YOU DID THIS TO ME “ , no man, they havent, they are there to help you they havent done anything.

8 - You being on the phone for an hour and waiting in the automated system is not an adviser’s issue, stop saying “ ive been on the phone for 2 hours waiting for someone “ that was your choice and it’s nobodys fault that youre waiting because YOU want to talk.

In general, have realistic expectations, listen to them and speak politely and be cooperative and friendly.

I have a buddy who works there for 3 years, he is mentally drained by absolute idiots calling, dont be one of them, have a nice one lads.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@Jerrywest very good advice.

To add Sky's systems require the agent to get answers to specific questions before they can move forward which can be annoying if you know that question is not relevant to your issue. You are not necessarily intially talking to a product specialist as Sky have a huge range of products you improve your chances of getting to the right team if you use a number generated at the end of an online help journey.
