Used home landline to call my mobile to find it at home. The mobile rang out but never answered it so no connection made, but stilll charged for what seems the time it rang out for. Surely no charge can be applied if no connection is made?

This is the most likely explanation - it may have gone to VM before the call was terminated. (Even whilst taking the phone away from your ear and hitting to hang up)

I get the VM thought, but I have VM switched off by default.

No it did not connect. I don't have voicemail turned on. It just timed our.
