Have obsolete sky box and attempted to upgrade my package.

Bought a new smart tv and rang sky to see what I could do with my current package.  Turned out I was paying €87 per month for basic+movies+kiddies channels.  Decided it was too dear and wanted to remove movies and kiddies channel.  Also explained that I couldn't get HD channels.  The sales person wanted to sell me a new box for €125 which I refused cos it was too dear, and I felt if the box needed to be upgraded the cost should be borne by Sky given the amount of money paid to them over the years.  She found it difficult to undertand me and I her.  At the end of the convversation I had agreed apparently to sky signature and sky hd for €41 per month.  I later realised that had I done same online I would have gotten more for even less money.  That evening a lot of the channels changed to HD and I could not geet them.  I called to Sky shop locally and expalined my situation. They said my box was obsolete and that Sky should replace it for free.   To sort that out I would need to ring Sky which I did.  The expected waiting time was 30 minutes this morning and is now 40 minutes.  I didn't have the time or money to wait that long.  Sky should not have put me on a Sky HD package if I didn't have the box to handle it.  Any suggestions as to any other way of getting problem resolved?

The local Sky shop was right - Sky+ is a legacy TV platform and I'm quite surprised Sky would allow you to switch to the Signature package. However, the more recent Sky+ boxes handle HD perfectly well. You can buy a used box cheaply from the likes of ebay etc.. Don't pay more than 30 euros or so.

There is an upgrade route to Sky Q which is Sky's current satellite TV platform. Whether or not it's free depends, I think, on the package options you take, but you would, as advised have to call. Waiting times are reportedly less when lines open or after 9.00pm

I suspect they were trying to charge you 125 Euros as the fee to receive a main Q box on loan: that's standard business practice for Sky on moving from Sky+ to Sky Q where a subscription isn't increasing.

Note that as you are (presumably) in RoI the offer of a 'free' upgrade to HD because of the closure of BBC SD channels doesn't apply.
