Cancelling account in ex husbands name

I need to cancel my sky account that is in my ex husbands name. I am paying for it through my bank account but I no longer want it. I have asked him several times to cancel it but he lives abroad now and hasn't done it. It's just to expensive for me to continue paying it.

Cancelling the direct debit is all you can do as that will then see Sky chase your ex as they are the account holder.

@Claire10100423  The account is in his name so he is liable for the payment and account not you

you can't cancel but you could withdraw payment method and any communication with be sent to him even if the register address is still yours

the only downside is that without him properly cancelling the account you won't be able to rejoin in your name at the same address in future

@Claire10100423

Perhaps explain to him that he is solely responsible for cancelling and if he doesn't then you'll stop payments and he will be chased for the money owed.

Hi @Claire10100423

I would start by raising a formal Complaint detailing the circumstances and take it from there.

@MightyQuinn  There is no point in op complaining has there are no grounds on which to do so

the account is in the exs name and sky will only deal with them

op has no legal rights or obligations to the account and sky will not deal with them as they are not the account holder

@Claire10100423

If you know the telephone password give Sky a call to discuss but as already stated you can't cancel it. If you withhold payments Sky will endeavour to get their money back but the buck stops with your ex. Making complaint will not do you any good for the reasons outlined by @SKY1992bf but speak to Sky to inform them what you're thinking of doing (stopping payments) otherwise they may try to get payment from the method they have on their system which is your bank/card details. They must come across similar scenarios fairly frequently.

Re: Cancelling account in ex husbands name

I have tried several times to get it cancelled, but as it is in his name they won't discuss it with me, annoyingly I can add products on to the account but not cancel it. Didn't want to just cancel the direct debit but it looks like thats the only option.
