For a whole year I've been paying for a sky box which has not been even switched on, how do I get a refund for these unnecessary bills?

The fact it is switched on doesn't come into it because if you want to cancel your TV service and you are not in a contract then you have to contact Sky and give them your 31 days notice, so you can either call or use the messaging service to do this.
