Any disadvantage to cancel & start again as a new customer?

Hi all

This just refers to a Sky TV package only, no broadband, phone lines, etc.

The retention/cancellation team can't give me the same deal as the prices on their website for a new customer.

So yesterday I cancelled my entire Sky package with them and plan to start again as a new customer using my wife's name, different username and email address. Same address of course. The chap on the phone said in theory this should be fine.

I want to switch from Sky Q to Sky Stream. It will be a little bit of hassle but not that bad I'm thinking, especially as I've got to remove the Sky Q equipment anyway. I've got 30 days to get the new setup in place before the Sky Q service stops working. I'll place a new order for Sky Stream, the Puck will turn up a few days later and I'll be up and running the same day.

I realise there will be a crossover period of a couple of weeks where I'll be paying twice, but this is more than offset by the savings over the new 2 year contract.

For clarification, I'm aware of the difference between Sky Q and Stream. I realise I'll lose the recording feature, the +1 channels, etc, etc. But in recent years, we hardly ever use the recordings, most of our viewing is on demand. We've got a FTTP, so streaming won't be an issue.

So this isn't a question about why they can't give me the same deal. That's been covered by dozens of posts already.

I've been with Sky for 26 years, I'm not interested in the Sky VIP benefits. I'm struggling to see any benefit of maintaining my 26 year streak? Being a loyal customer just doesn't mean anything these days.

So if I sign up as a new customer for 2 years, are there going to be any disadvantages going forward?

I presume I'll get the same April price increase next year as existing customers will get?

What's likely to happen in 2 years when my contract ends? Presumably it'll be rinse and repeat - They won't match the new customer deal of the time, so I'll cancel again and create another new customer order.

Thoughts anyone?

Many thanks.

@CHA0S  You won't get very far if your wife has the same surname, sky are too wise for that trick

@CHA0S

It may not be that simple. Sky are wise to this ploy to obtain new customer rates. If Sky were okay with it everyone would be doing it every 24 months. Some people would see it as deceitful.

You mean they'd like to make a profit instead of loss-leading new customer deals?  Getting new customers is harder than retaining them.

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers

@Truth404  and some people might say they're not overcharging existing customers, but undercharging new customers!

Did this work for you? I was thinking of doing similar?

On a side note, I dont see how it's OK for big companies to take advantage and back you into a corner on bills, but you can't do the same back.

Sky has been in business for approaching four decades, and so has seen every possible customer manoeuvre many times before.

Um, capitalism?
