My contract is up for renewal. I have been given a price of £51. if I renew for 24 months. I pay £34 at the moment. This, seems, like a big increase

Quite possibly. Sky isn't obliged to offer anything better though: they may or may not choose to do so.

The current business model appears to prioritise attracting new customers over retaining existing ones.

Also remember you’re not a new Sky customer so don’t expect anything on a par to a new customer deal.

See this link…
https://www.sky.com/help/articles/change-your-package-2-t2#downgrade

If you decide it’s no longer value for money and you’re thinking of changing providers remember that at the end of their minimum term you'll be in the same position with that company at which point you'll be able to return to Sky and benefit from the new customer discounts available at that particular time.

Unfortunately when that term end as in your case, and you re- subscribe as exsisting customer the discounts offer are not nearly as so good and a lot higher than initial contract price as you have found out.
if you are unhappy with Skys offer you are quite at liberty to find another provider who you will be a new customer to them and will probably offer you a lower price. But bear in mind when that period ends with them , just as with Sky you will be an exsisting customer With them, so there next offer with them will again probably be lot higher than the initial one
