Thanks for that Mark, I wasn't given the option to pick a talk package though when I upgraded my contract

So I've just been speaking to an agent who it seems has ended our chat abruptly for some unknown reason.
I was asking him why after going through my contract renewal that I would be charged £17 a month for 'talk' this was not stated anywhere! I upgraded to £46 a month broadband but that takes it to £63 a month...a ridiculous amount. I'm also going to be charged £84 next month, what for I don't know as none of it makes sense when I check the itemised bill! How are they getting away with not stating these charges clearly???

£17 per month sounds like Sky Talk Anytime+ - a call package. You don't have to sign up to a call package if you don't want one. You can take the Pay as you Talk package which has no monthly subscription. You simply pay (extortionately) for every call you make.

The month following a subscription change is likely to be higher, because you're paying from the date the contract changed to the end of the current month AND for the next month in full (because you pay in advance).
