topic You Happy with this Sky? in Account & Billing

I called Sky yesterday for my mum she is 88 years old and partially sighted. I noticed that her Sky bill has ramped up from an initial £40 ish per month to £59 🤯. I get through to India I'm guessing, the lady informed me that despite 19 years with Sky there were no offers available.

OK thank you then please cancel the account that is basic TV, Broadband and phone. I inform the lady I had done some homework ahead of the call and I can cover my mum's requirements for around £35 per month.

Her response was, don't be caught out if you go elsewhere then within months they will ramp up your monthly costs. 😳. Hang on if anyone ramps up costs it is Sky and besides the deal is £3.00 increase April 2026 and again 2027 on a 24 month contract. I felt as though I was speaking to an Indian scam call centre not Sky. Incensed by her poor understanding of an 88 year olds requirements and the threats of being conned by another provider I suggested we part ways.

Later the same day a Scottish guy calls from retentions, how can we keep your mum after 19 years? Well you can listen to my earlier call with your Indian call centre reflect and callback. He said that is what they shall do and will call back on Monday. In the meantime he reduced my mum's monthly billing by £10.00 with immediate effect no contract goodwill gesture. I was grateful for that but explained I can get what she needs cheaper.

He will call on Monday with a revised offer so give Sky the opportunity of course, but to be bullied with fear of increases if switching is appalling practice, sure I can see through this but how many elderly customers especially cannot.

Sky shameful action!

Yes I know only community members here and Sky won't see this but that is not the point, customers need to be aware of these shameful shameful tactics.

 Firstly welcome to the forum,

It's not bullying and they are right, others like virgin media offer the same as sky giving discounts to new customers and then later increase the subscription, this is well known, they offer new customers a deal to get them to take up a subscription with them and once the offer has run out then you have to pay what the subscription is, you may be able to negotiate some discounts but you will be in the same situation as now we are all fellow customers on here like yourself

The standard ISP business model, particularly for providers on the national Openreach network, is now a 24 month minimum term containing two annual price rise and then reversion to significantly higher list pricing unless another minimum term is contracted.
