Cancelling sky tv

Hello, I tried to cancel my sky subscription today (unfortunately) I am unable to afford it anymore.

I was told I was not able to cancel my tv subscription at all unless I was close to my contract date. Rewind 7 weeks ago or so I rang for the same reason, and was told there would be a one off cancellation fee, at that point it was something like £250! I said I would discuss it with my wife and we would go from there. So that's why I called today to cancel it and pay the one off fee I was previously told about. So why was I told today that I am unable to cancel and I shouldn't have been told I was able to and to pay a cancellation fee!?

I am really unable to pay the amount to a change in my circumstances and just wanted this sorted without worrying every month about this extra mount going out of my account. Help please
