You can certainly do that, but if Sky think you still owe them money, they'll pursue for it. It's normal to overpay when you cancel your service - it's the way Sky's billing works. They will, of course, refund the overpayment from the date your services ended.

Not that simple folks - here's my sad saga with Sky

My final Sky Bill for May last covered services from May 13th to June 12th – a period for which I had no services but the direct Debit was called by Sky and paid. .

As I had no service for this payment I exercised my Consumer rights under the SEPA Direct Debit scheme (EPC SEPA schemes enabling billers to debit money from the account of a payer | European Payments Council) and arranged an 8 week refund from my bank for this Direct Debit.

On July 2nd I received a letter back dated as June 20th from Sky seeking a repayment to close my Sky Account. Using My Sky and automated phone menu service I could not get clarification of what this charge is for.

Now today I received another follow up letter backdated as July 5th demanding payment within 14 days of the letter and threatening referral to Debt Collection Agency if payment not made.

@DenisR It looks like you have gone the wrong way about this entirely, did you give 31 days notice to cancel? If not then billing would continue. Have you assumed that the discount end date was a contract end date?

How did you cancel? Did you receive confirmation that your cancellation was processed?

If so billing will continue up to the next due date, at which point any overpayment would have been refunded to you.

Making the claim on your direct debit as you did has resulted in the backdated payments being claimed.

Untill you actually cancel your services payment is still due and will continue to be so until you move provider or cancel your services.
