Building works in the house, permanent changes to rooms

Hi Folks, newbie here......I'm not techy, my grandson usually sorts stuff out for me but he's away at work, so I'd appreciate any advice please. Builders are going to be gutting and extending our front room at the front right hand side of the house where we watch TV - Sky Q to turn it into a permanent dining room. We have a family room on the opposite side of the house that we're turning into our front room. We 'll need to have Sky Q working in that room but the Sky Dish of course is on the front right side of the house opposite and it would be loads of messy wiring to get the cables moved internally.

Should I ask Sky to visit and run the cable right round the house on the outside - I dont really want that - or can I ask to have a Sky Dish fitted where it really needs to be on the exterior wall behind where the TV is going to be in future. HELP please.

We thought about having SkyGlass - it sounds lovely and non-techy so that would be lovely - but apparently it wouldnt let me record stuff and I do loads of that.

Sky will charge in the region of £65 to move the cables around the exterior of the house. The dish would be more problematic unless where you want it placing still has direct line of sight towards the south east.

Apparently it would be better on the other side of the house where we will need it to be now, a few years back when the SkyQ fitter put it where it is at the moment he showed me how the other local houses all had their dish on the opposite side of the house back then it was a closer cable run to our TV to site it where he did.

Given the expense you are presumably already incurring, the additional cost of employing a local independent satellite dish contractor who can take the time to do a good job would effectively be negligible. While Sky personnel have a fixed price for dish relocation they aren't necessarily going to be available when you need them or particularly motivated to find the optimal solution.

In addition to what @Daniel0210 has posted you, perhaps, should also consider getting a local independent Satellite Installer to look at your needs and give you possible options - they are more likely to be able to customise things to your requirements.

(Edit It seems I am much slower typing than @TimmyBGood )

Regarding switching to SKY Glass - unless you need a new TV the better option is SKY Stream which is a set top box for the same service. It is quite different but the lack of recording in the same way as SKY Q may not be as big as you think - I cannot really advise as I am still very much a SKY Q user but do consider looking at the Stream forums and ask questions there - there are some very helpful SUs that have Stream & can advise.

Just be aware that it you go down the local satellite company route

get a quote first
if they put the dish where Sky would deem it unsuitable, Sky could refuse to carry out any repairs on it in the future. Skys Health & Safety regs are much more stringent than local firms.

I've been with SKY for 25 years and I'd rather get them to do it because they presumably have the best tech kit to get me the best signal

SKY Engineer's have a standard, limited, set of kit - they are not equipped (nor have time) to do anything much outside a standard installation

Obviously local Independent installers may vary but should have equivalent meters and will have access to a wider variety of fixtures & fittings and as @TimmyBGood says more time to do a more customised job.

Such hardware is now widely available (you could buy it yourself on eBay) and an independent contractor will have a wider choice.

Realistically, satellite signal only has to be 'good enough' anyway: once it's sufficient then other factors are more significant for image quality which is what you'll actually notice.
