Duracell battery exploded in my sky remote

I've just been sat here watching tell with the remote in my lap when I heard a loud pop and felt it on my lap. It took me a couple of minutes to realise it was the batteries in my sky remote! My husband had just open the remote to find the acid all over and the battery still fizzing! I've replaced with new batteries and luckily the remote still works. Thought I best report as it seems it's common problem!

Certainly not a common problem we see on here.

If that happened to me I would want to replace the remote to be on the safe side although I agree it's probably a battery issue not the remote.

If you follow this link it should send you to a form to request a replacement (I’m not sure if this is available to customers in the Republic of Ireland).

It may be quicker to purchase a new remote from a retailer / larger supermarket.

More likely due to mixing old and new batteries or perhaps mixing different types together.

The batteries were the Duracell ones that came with the remote. I've only had sky for 3/4 months

Afraid batteries can leak and do pop as described when they do so.

As above, some information has already been mentioned, mixing different types or different aged batteries can cause to some power surges and leaks.
Also high or low temperatures can cause issues, they are designed for use at normal room temperature and in a dry environment.

For many battery brands, you can check the expiry date on a battery.

Always best to honour that.

For a remote control, it would most probably not have caused any damage to the remote control itself, if a new set of batteries restores its use.

I've seen another post where it's happened to another user twice so thought I best report incase it is a fault with the remote. Thanks for the link I will try to order a new one - hoping it's still under warranty!

All Sky equipment is loaned during your subscription. They will replace hardware as necessary - warranty doesn't apply as such.

Just had a quick search and apparently it's happened to many more customers than just the two of you over a few years, which was news to me. Perhaps due to storage in China or Taiwan ( or wherever they've been manufactured over the years) in extremely hot or humid conditions for long periods? It made me check mine just now as I had to ask for a replacement a while back, our's developed very fine hairline cracks that spread to every part of the front of the remote with bits flaking off. Far too fragile a plastic used.

Always use genuine batteries from a reputable source. I bought some batteries off Amazon (Marketplace) and they turned out to be counterfeit!
