After 2030?

Having just found out that the satellite option stops in 2030 as they will be done, does anyone know if there will be another option for sky q users?

we record everything to watch later and we stream Netflix etc. plus we don't like their TVs. And it's another thing to pay for.
Will there be a replacement box maybe that deals with the internet instead but we can record on?
or am I too hopeful?

Already here - Sky Stream.

Recording will be consigned to history. There's no need to record as you just stream on demand.

And those of us who don't want the tv?
im not alone in recording it's one of the best things Q does.
I am not a fan of how streaming UI work, I like to know where they are and find them easily lol.
I guess it will be just time to move on then. We only have it for husbands documentaries and the movie channels mostly anyway now.

Sky Stream does not come with a TV. (Sounds like you'll are confusing it with Sky Glass)

Perhaps you need to evaluate your needs now if that's the majority of your viewing.

You don't need to buy a TV from Sky. The Sky Stream puck is seen as the replacement for Sky Q - it's a small box that connects to your existing TV using a similar HDMI cable. It doesn't record from satellite though, it streams everything using your broadband connection.

If you want Sky Stream then it is essential that you make sure you can provide a fast and stable broadband connection at all times. There is no engineer support for Sky Stream - it is entirely self install so you need a certain level of tech savviness in order to set it up and maintain it.

There are plenty of alternatives to Sky these days. If you choose to switch to streaming your TV then you can purchase your own streaming device and subscribe to the services that you want to watch. This more DIY approach can often work out cheaper in the long run, depending on what you watch and how you like to watch it. You can even get all the same Sky Documentary and Movie channels you get on Q by using the NOW TV app without any need for a full Sky TV subscription via Q, Stream or Glass.

Not having control over recording is a clear and massive downgrade.

Just as streaming itself is a downgrade when it comes to simple things like changing channels (or even worse, having to switch between streaming apps).

Hi @High+Chaparral Have a look at one of the help videos and you will see that Stream has an EPG just like Sky Q and instead of recording you add your programmes to a playlist. Using the remote - Sky Stream

My reference to apps is about how, for example, jumping back and forth between two live sporting events - say the Champions League on Prime and the snooker World Champs on BBC - becomes a massive pain if one of them is on a streaming service. That's not Sky's fault specifically, but just another example of why streaming is a downgrade over broadcast, particularly when the content is live.

And as I also said, simply changing channels on Sky Stream is laggy.

So I use up bandwidth on my internet connection, have a slower and laggier user experience, live sport is no longer as live as it used to be, I can't record exactly what I want... how is this better for me?

Hi @High+Chaparral It is what it is, being better doesn't come into it. If it is not for you, then eventually (we have a few more years yet) it will be time to cancel Sky TV and move on ... They are now talking about switching off terrestrial TV in 2035.

The world doesn't stop for more important things. If we are all still here by then, then absoultely its important.

I would also add that you are here on a forum when maybe there are more important things you could be doing by that way of thinking?

That does indeed sound like it. I wasn't aware there was an alternative as normally they are trying to push the tv onto me.

Its ok though streaming, when you have a signal and it doesn't decide to go down for some random reason. At least recorded things mean you can happily carry on watching 🙂

The content owners would disagree: they don't want you to have control over their product.
