It is really a question of what you download the most, kids programmes or F1 (are you sure that Sky F1 is even available in SD?).

It's not :). Sky Sports F1 is available in HD and UHD/4K (with glorious HDR for the main F1 sessions and Ted's Notebook). There is no SD variant of the F1 channel or any of the other Sports channels. The only exceptions to this are SkySp News and SkySp Mix.

Note that HD for the Sports channels is completely free so there's no point in the SD versions existing.

I have signature + sky sports HD and kids pack. I dont have the full HD pack add on. Normally i only watch sky sports or the terrestrial channels which are in HD anyway so didnt see the point. However when trying to play some catch up programs on kids channels they wouldnt work because i dont have HD i think, surely they cant sell me a pack (the kids pack) and then tell me i cant play the shows in that pack unless i get the HD pack... or am i misunderstanding?

No, that's correct. You need the HD pack to watch the HD kids channels, just as you need the HD pack to view Sky Signature channels in HD. Most channels that require the HD pack still have SD versions available and you can also download programmes from catch-up in SD and watch them that way.
