Wouldn't there be a notice to say it's going to be deleted or expired?

Not necessarily.

I have movies that I downloaded 3 years ago and still haven't watched.

Ongoing availability varies item by item.

Downloads typically have time limits: in this case the BBC (not Sky) paid for 30 day distribution rights. Recordings made from a live broadcast EPG channel usually don't expire (although hard drives do fail)

The only way for a consumer to have a right to retain content is to buy it, either as a digital purchase (although that's not absolutely guaranteed to remain available) or an optical disk.

My son is obsessed with boss baby, it came on BBC 1 over Christmas so I recorded it and he literally watches is everyday.

Strangely on Monday the recording disappeared. I checked the deleted folder and it wasn't there. I done a search for the movie and it took me to sky store to purchase the movie.

Have sky really deleted something recorded from a channel that has nothing to do with them so I would have to buy it?

Recordings don't auto delete. Did you perhaps download the film instead? Downloads from catch up services do expire, often after 30 days for films. It was shown on 4th January so would have expired from iPlayer within the last few days.

The same thing happened to us tonight. I recorded Shaun the sheep movie from bbc the other day. It was showing on our box yesterday. We sit down tonight to watch it and it's gone along with the second one we also recorded. There is no way it's expired as it was less than a week since we recorded it. In the end we had to go on bbc I player to watch it. Nothing in our deleted. Memory isn't full either.

Same thing happened to me I'd recorded Gavin and Stacey over Christmas even put "keep" on the recording. Neither my wife or I have deleted it and it's not in the deleted folder yet it's nowhere to be seen!
