the box dropped off the tv unit and now when I want to record or delete programs it's saying I have a issue with the hard drive.

Use the hardware troubleshooter on the sky site to get a replacement

That sounds pretty terminal.

You will need to contact Sky to arrange a replacement as you're likely to be charged for damaging the original.
