Free Sky Sports

I called Sky today to renegotiate my contract. The girl offered me free Sky Sports for the whole 24 months of my new contract (we've never had it before). We've been stung by supposed 'free' and 'cancel at any time' offers in the past so, not willing to be stung again, I must have asked about 4 times if this was real and free for the WHOLE 24 months...yes, she said, please check your bill if you don't believe.

So,1 I read somewhere that someone was offered the same and then was charged after a month. I called back and asked them to remove Sky Sports, telling them my concerns. The person assured me 3 times is was a legit offer and said I could cancel giving 31 days notice if I was ever charged. I asked him to send me an email detailing that it would be free for the whole 24 months- he refused. So, have I been duped? Should I call back and cancel? Anyone else had this offer and can confirm it's deffo legit? I don't actually need Sports, just took it as it was free and my son would like it but it's not something I'm willing to,pay for.

I'd be very surprised if it was free for 24 months imo. Sky Sports complete is over £33pm undiscounted so that would be nearly £800 over 2 years.

I know, right?!! Even though my bill shows the sky sports as discounted until January 2028, I think I'll call tomorrow and cancel it. Don't believe it's worth the paper (or screen) it's written on.

@Pix70 What? It actually shows a discount equaling free sky sports for 24 months? If it actually did it would say the word FREE where the amount payable for sports should be, what do future bills show? If you don't mind would you be able to post a screenshot of your bill ensuring you don't show any personal information such as account number

It does appear that you've got it for Free then.

I would add that when the annual price rise hits in April, Sky Sports may go up by £1 or two and your discount would still be £34. But even then, Sky Sports for £2 per month is a bargain.

Keep a screenshot of that with the expiry date in case there ever is a dispute but sounds like a very good retention deal.

Wow it does indeed looks like you're hit the jackpot with that offer has it does indeed seem has you have it free @Pix70 as @Chodley says I would keep that screenshot and any other proof you have safe and indefinitely in case of come back

As mentioned above, if that is showing on your future MySky app, online account and via your Sky box MySky bill listings, it's a correct deal.

A great deal by the way.

As mentioned above, any annual price rises will still be applied, so you could be billed a few pounds or so each month from the next 'April' TV pack increase for your Sky Sports pack, but your current discounts will remain as they are.

Normally you will get an email of any changes or you can view those in your MYSky messages that will detail the changes applied.

But do take a screenshot as mentioned of the current and a few future bills for any future reference.

Thanks everyone. I have screenshotted everything and taken photos of all the handwritten notes I made during all the conversations with dates, times names etc so I'd like to think Ive covered every base.

Yes, I've just been given the same deal. Very poorly described to me so was wary but got the confirmation email breaking it down and billing shows the same breakdown as the original poster. I was only on the phone to arrange a replacement streaming puck!

Can I please ask the original poster how long they have been with Sky?

I'm currently renegotiating my contract with Sky and, although they have offered me a decent discount, they have not offered me free Sky Sports! I've been with them nearly 30 years and am paying around £190 or so a month for the lot (Sky Sports, TNT Sports, Ultimate - which is basically Netflix, so why don't they just call it that?! - Sky Cinema, multi-room with one other box, HD, broadband). I am ditching TNT Sports as it's nearly £30 a month on its own and I understand that Sky do not get good offer rates from TNT to encourage contract renewals, but free Sky Sports is very much something that would sway me to stay!

As I understand it, the OP had never had Sky Sports. So giving something for free that they would never likely pay for isn't costing Sky anything.

They aren't going to give it for free to someone who has paid for it for 30 years because they know you'll probably keep paying for it.

That's a fair point but the original poster was still renegotiating their contract. If I tell Sky I'll leave if they don't offer me the same deal for Sky Sports, then they are getting nothing at all from me. As I said, I've been with Sky nearly thirty years and I certainly don't think it's fair if they offer another existing customer Sports for free if that vustomer has only been with Sky for, say, five years.

It's essentially punishing me for being loyal, as I see it.

Well, let's face it, you were only "loyal" because they provided something you valued for a price you were prepared to pay, let's not romanticise a business relationship.

And now that price/value equation has shifted in your perception vs alternatives.

They do normally balance some kind of discount with getting you to commit for another 2 years but if no free sports then they are probably making a bet that you won't leave. There is a way to prove them wrong.

I'm not sure that "romanticising" it is what I'm doing. Brand loyalty is a real thing and matters to customers, and is therefore a valid business negotiating tool, especially when one sees another customer being offered the same package (i.e. Sky Sports) for nowt.

I may well do exactly what you propose, as the tipping point for what I perceive to be value for money when it comes to PL football has certainly now gone the other way. I'll still ask the question though, before I decide what to do.

We've been with them for 20 years and never had sky sports in all that time.

We did upgrade to full fibre at the same time, so took an upgraded product too. Don't know if that made a difference or not.

In addition, they refused to give me the same deal on the fibre as a new customer would have had (I tried).

I was offered the sky sports on my 2nd call when i rang up to query the phone line/calls charge showing on future bills, so not at the very initial call
