Sky Q ethernet setup

Hi, I'm wanting to setup sky q to mini boxes using ethernet. Could someone with more knowledge than me, advise on the best set up please? I've been given two possible setups, (or is there a 3rd better one)? TIA

For me, it would be neither, bearing in mind the mini boxes are not connecting directly to your BT Smart Hub (or any hub apart from a Sky Wifi 5 one), they are only ever trying to connect to the main Sky Q box as that is what acts as the master and serves up everything, including internet access.

When I had a BT Smart Hub I connected the main Sky Q box via ethernet, although a PLA will also work. I switched off 2.4ghz in the installer menu (use forum search for instructions), then went to the next nearest node (mini box) and connect via WPS, daisy chaining from there.

You will also need to change the 5ghz band parameters either on the BT hub or main Sky Q box to avoid interference.

If distance is an issue and your reason for using PLAs, then option 1, resetting the wifi to "off" on each Sky Q mini as you go to force the ethernet usage.

You may find it takes a while to connect to the main Q box and every couple of weeks you will likely need to turn the wifi off again as it likes to turn itself back on.

PLAs are only as good as the mains wiring they are connected to and can introduce fresh problems, such as hard to diagnose interference that affects the picture.

@Whothen When using ethernet I have found it best to turn off the WiFi in all of the Sky Q devices, as mixing ethernet and Sky Q WiFi just ends up with the Sky Q devices continually attempting to use WiFi instead of the ethernet connection.

Not all Powerline devices have the same performance when connected to household mains ringmain wiring via domestic consumer units, I personally recommend the Devolo Magic 2 devices for long term stability and connectivity quality.

Thus, this is the setup that I have used to connect several friends and neighbours who have houses that make the basic Sky Q devices WiFi mesh struggle.

Option 2. They can talk to the Q over powerline ethernet, and maybe some of that chatty traffic won't be re-broadcast by the router if you're lucky. This is very close to how I have it set up

and yeah disable wifi on all the Q boxes
