I noticed a SKY Q update that included that HDR was now available on Sky Q satellite receiver. I followed the instructions and enabled 10 bit 2160. The change to 2160 10 bit appeared to have enabled HDR.

However, I have seen that the picture keeps dropping out temporarily to a blackout before resuming the HDR image.
I also found that when I tried to view the Sky help HDR setup videos, the video help only showed standard video help screens. I wasn't able to select the ultra 4k HDR video in the help panel.
I have now reverted back to 2160 8 bit and it seems to have stopped the blackout issue.

My question is why does the blackout happen? Is it because my LG OLED55CX5LB is not compatible with the 10 bit settings for HDR or is it because my Sky Q 1tb box isn't able to work properly on the 10 bit setting.

@quadnutter

I believe your TV is an OLED with a 10 bit panel, much like my considerably older LG B6 that works fine with the HLG HDR content supplied by Sky.

Assuming you have definitely activated HDMI Deep Colour in the LG menus for the port connected to the Sky Q box, I would be checking the cable is correctly seated in the box and TV ports and then looking at getting a new, 4K certified high speed HDMI cable (you do not need to spend loads).

Or if you have a spare knocking about, try that.

Using 8 bit removes the HDR element, the box has to be in 10 bit to deliver it and many think HDR (which can even be used in 1080p), is more important to the viewing experience than 4K resolution.

Also there has been no recent update to enable HDR; it has been available since May 2020.

Thank you for your reply. I have reconnected (resea) my HDMI cables and this has resolved the problem. The 10bit option for HDR is working now.
