New SkyQ box due in December 2025

I am hearing that a new SkyQ box will be issued at the end of this year. I am currently OUT OF CONTRACT but have maintained subscription. I would like some information on my options if I renew contract with Sky.

Hi @TRAPPERJOHN That sounds extremely unlikely, did you "hear" this from an official Sky announcement? Perhaps you could provide a reference. What sort of information of options are you after. Sky normally charge (£99) administration fee for an updated box, even if there is a new one.

Highly unlikely based on Comcast seeing the way forward as Stream/Glass and the satellite infrastructure is likely to end in about 5 years.

It's not likely. The future of Sky is Streaming. The satellite products will plod along but won't get any real investment and then will shut down when the satellites retire likely 2029/2030. At that point I imagine Sky will either send everyone Stream pucks or upgrade Q software to run SkyOS like Sky Germany has now done with their Sky Q IP product.

The only chance I could see them doing this is to release a box which can more easily turn into a Stream box when the transition happens.

If you renew your contract with Sky now, when the new box is released you can enquire about any upgrade costs and will likely need to re-contract again.

Of course, if no new box is released, then you will still have over a year to run on the contract you have agreed.

Like others have said, I think new Q hardware is unlikely, perhaps an updated processor and a bit more memory if we are really lucky, but Sky/Comcast are putting all their eggs in the streaming basket as far as we can tell, with satellite delivery ending and fibre broadband availability increasing.

In the extremely unlikely event that such hardware is forthcoming, it would presumably be under NDA until a public announcement is made (which wouldn't be in this forum to start with)

I'm not sure that is technically feasible with the Sky Q satallite boxes, the Sky Q IPTV boxes in Germany were already streaming devices (hence the IPTV name) making a transition to stream easier.

I cancelled my Sky Q service & tried EE mini box. I couldn't get on with mini box it kept cutting off while watching any of the Apps. EE agreed to cancel & I went back to SKY, they are coming next week to fit a upgraded SKY Q box I don't know what the difference is but they are recovering the old box & fitting a new one free of charge.

Upgraded from what? What version is your current/old box?

There hasn't been a 'new' Q box since the release of the 1TB UHD/HDR in November 2019.

Sky Q won't end that quickly. It's here for another decade or more. Even if a few hundred thousand customers refuse to transition and would go the route of buying free view boxes so they can keep using a dish, then that would represent a significant loss of business for Sky. Personally if they got rid of Q, I would get a free view box that could record live tv. It's very doable. Also, I am happy to pay extra to get Q over stream.

@GardenZen There's a slight flaw to this plan, the current satellites only have a few years left, 4 or thereabouts, after which time there would be nothing to receive, so decades is a bit optimistic.

Four years is around the corner. Risky strategy to presume all those paying customers will simply migrate. Is there any proof Q *can't* continue past 4 little years? Let's wait and see.

Hi @GardenZen I assume that you mean Freesat boxes, Freeview boxes use a terrestrial aerial. Freesat boxes use the same satellites as Sky Q so will have the same expected life.

Sky is the worst company I have ever had dealings with, I have been a Sky customer for over 25 years, They have messed me around for over 2 months now cancelling the installation of Sky Q on the afternoon that they were meant to turn up, this has happened 3 times now when each time I have taken time of work to be home when they were meant to come, they are still billing me even though I have had no service, this is what you call a company with the monopoly being incompetent liars

It's not a case of waiting to see "what gets decided", the fact is that the satellite that is used to relay the signal to the the UK will fail in approximately 4 years and there is no planned replacement. Consequently ALL satellite based broadcasting will end.

Given that Sky is owned by one of the largest cable-TV (not Satellite) firms and they've already signalled publicly their strategy to move to streaming it's unlikely they'll want to invest the billions in launching new satellites in a shrinking, highly competitive market

But, let's wait and see...

Only about eighty to a hundred million apiece these days (including launch) but the point still stands.
