hi I've just taken delivery of an OLED 48 inch screen Samsung all the programs are absolutely fine filling the screen to the edge.

However when I use go to the apps i.e. Netflix , iPlayer etc the programs have a black bar on the top and the bottom I don't really want to change the screen size on my new TV because that will affect the rest of the programs I'm sure please advise

@anita+db

As @PandJ2020 says what are you watching.

I have just tried a few different programmes/films in Netflix on my SKY Q box, Firestick & TV apps - they all work the same for me

Some do have black bars top & bottom as they were shot in a different ratio (noticable on THe new film The Six Tripple Eight) whereas the TV Series CSI (series 10 #1) that I checked fills the screen.

A lot of content is not shot in 16:9 ratio which the TV is

BTW We do recommend using the TVs own apps as these usually have Dolby Vision (not sure about Samsung) & are optimsed for the TV (also if you have a Surround System capable of Atmos this)

It all depends on the the content shot

Many Older TVs will stretch , Squeeze or Crop the picture so that you always filled the screen

Modern 4K Tvs will not do this but instead add black bars either Top & bottom (or Left & Right for older 4:3 content)

By adding the black bars you are seeing the picture in the screen ratio that the makers intended

it may seem a bit strange if you are not used to it.

I have always preferred to see content in the ratio it was shot in

The argument would be that your modern television is displaying content as its creator intended it to be seen, while older sets permitted an unfortunate distortion which was tolerated when screens were smaller.

Which aside from big hollywood movies is actuallly pretty rare these days because so much content is being aimed at streaming viewing. What actual content did you test so we can see how it behaves on our setups?

But assuming it is 2.35:1 or 1.85:1

.... to fill the whole screen, the picture either has to be distorted or bits cut off. I think the industry decided about 10 years ago, once TV screens got pretty damn big, to stop letting people mess up their beautifully crafted movies just to light every pixel on an arbritrarily sized screen 😁 so they stopped offering those weird zoom options.

hi in the previous post above only certain apps on the TV i.e. Netflix iPlayer Prime Video on certain programs series or films are showing the black bar above and below. The only option I have on this new TV is resolution 16.9 or custom ? and neither seems to eradicate that, so sounds like I've just gotta put up with it.

What. Actual. Content?

because (for example) Sky Cinema is in the right format, fills my 16:9 screen

but if the actual movie was shot at a wider aspect ratio, then that will have black bars - Wonka in this example a couple of minutes later

So if you have some content on Prime which maybe should be 16:9 but has black bars, what actual program/movie is it? We can check if we get the same.

but if the actual movie was shot at a wider aspect ratio, then that will have black bars - Wonka in this example a couple of minutes later

I believe Wonka is in 2.39 : 1

This is not the same as the 2005 Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which apparently has different aspect ratios depending on the distribution medium but had an IMAX release in 1.85 : 1
