TV switching from SkyQ to TV after 20 minutes

I have an unusual problem with my system. TV is a Loewe Bild 7.55. SkyQ, AppleTV box and Oppo 203 are all plugged into my AVR via HDMI with a single HDMI cable from the AVR to the TV.

I’ll be watching a programme on Sky or a recording and the picture on the TV will switch from Sky on HDMI4 to TV. The sound from Sky is still playing but now I have TV playing as well so two lots of sound delayed by a fraction of a second. My TV has an aerial of course.

After more analysis this only seems to happen when watching Sky. Films via the Oppo and streaming from the Apple box don’t exhibit this problem. My suspect is now the SkyQ box. I unplugged it yesterday evening and after it rebooted it was fine for the rest of the evening.

But when it does happen I switch the TV back to HDMI4. Instead of seeing a picture I now see a screen full of snow indicating no signal. I suspect the TV Is detecting no picture signal and automatically reverting to the TV signal. But the sound is still present. I can get the Sky picture back by toggling the Sky power.

Today i watched YT via the Apple box for 40 mins and all was well. I then turned on the Sky box at 17:20 to watch BBC1. Exactly 20 mins later the signal switched to the TV but Sky sound was still audible.

I've looked through the Sky settings but can't see anything that would cause this problem. Anyone got any clues?

A drop out from SKY is not likely to result in the video switching to TV or other signal

this sounds more like an issue with the AV or the TV

Have you tried plugging SKY into a different HDMI input on your AV ?

BTW Can I just double check when you say switch to HDMI 4 is that HDMI 4 on the TV or HDMI 4 on the AV - I am guessing on the AV as your TV ARC HDMI seems to HDMI 1

@nigea99 , thanks for your reply. If it was the TV why wouldn't the problem occur during the 40 mins I was watching YT via the Apple box plugged into a different HDMI port on the AVR? And it doesn't happen when watching DVDs via the Oppo. Just with Sky.

It's very difficult to get access to the back of the AVR to change inputs.

HDMI4 is on the TV. It's the only one that supports HDR. The TV is 8 years old and one of the first OLEDs.

The only input used on the TV is HDMI4. I don't use the others and CEC is turned off on both TV and Sky.

Given the problem hasn't reoccurred after 1h 15m it does look to be a one-off but happens every day. I'll note times tomorrow and if the problem occurs after 20 mins watching Sky it does rather point to Sky.

just so I am clear when it happens the TV you get is Freeview on the TV ?

If it does continue, I know it it may be a pain, but I really do suggest you try switching SKY Q to a different input on your AVR to specifically point to SKYQ rather than the AV

Does your AV receiver Support ARC & either way are you using an optical cable from your TV to the AV ?

BTW I think it is unusual that the ARC HDMI on a TV is not as good as other ports

EDIT : IF I read the manual I found correctly then maybe it is as I see it mentions HDMI 1* 2.0a & 1ARC

@nigea99 , yes, Freeview. The AVR is an Arcam AVR21 so a decent make. eARC and CEC control on the AVR are both off.

No optical cable. I use an HDMI with Dolby Digital + selected in Sky menu.

I'd like to do a reset using the hidden menu. Even if it doesn't change anything it will rule out the SkyQ box so I can then look at changing inputs to the AVR.

I was asking about the optical as your AV amp clearly isn't conected via HDMI for sound from the TV so I am guessing you don't use the TV apps (or at least don;t use the AVR if you do)

This makes my other suggestion to try a bit more difficult as I was thinking of suggesting you try SKY Q direct to TV and using either the ARC connection back to AV (or if you already had it in place the optical) - alternatively for the duration of such a test rely on TV sound I guess

If I'm watching the TV or the apps on it I just listen to the TV speakers. I've never been a fan of eARC as it's never worked for me. And given it only works with HDMI1 input that's no good for me as that input on the TV doesn't support HDR. Loewe were a bit tight in that respect.

Connecting the SkyQ box direct to the TV is difficult because of rear access. I'm trying the easy options first. Do you recommend System reboot via hidden menu just to rule the Sky box out? This has been going on for a few months.

And as I type this everything is fine. No repeat of the problem two hours in.

Assuming your AV has an optical input It might be worth getting an optical cable for when you do use the TV apps

It might be worth trying a reset of your SKY Q box but do make sure you only choose the 1st option so as not to loose recordings - you will need to reset/re-pair your remote afterwards

@nigea99 , I don't want to introduce more cables. I can watch apps via the Apple box and get sound through my AVR.

Yes, I've done the reset before so know not to choose the nuclear option. 😉

I'll do the reset just before bed so everything is setup for the same test tomorrow. If the problem occurs after 20 mins it will then point to either the TV or AVR.

@cuke , I'd forgotten about the Sky forum when I posted on AVForums.

As you can see I'm taking a logical approach to a problem that only seems to occur once after 20 mins of the SkyQ box being on. If cabling is the cause that would be very strange.

Today's update. I watched YT for around 1.5hrs before switching over to Sky. After 15 mins the switch back to Freeview BBC1 occurred. Five minutes earlier than yesterday.

After the problem occurred yesterday things were fine for the rest of the evening. Let's see what happens this evening. The reset of the Sky box hasn't cured it. I'm pondering what to change next.

Even though it may be difficult to access, I do suggest you try swapping SKY Q over with another input on your AV and see if it still happens with SKY or whether it happens on the device you switch it with

(BTW Although not directly relevant to this but just to let you know, in my main room I route everything through my Yamaha Amp - although my TV does support HDR on the ARC input so can use that for the odd occasion I use a TV app rather than my Firestick)

@nigea99 , that looks like the next best option. I'll swap the Apple box and Sky HDMI cables over. I'll swap the end that goes into each device leaving the AVR inputs alone.

@cuke , I'm sure you'll be watching with interest.

With a Harmony Elite it's going to mess up the macros but that's unavoidable. A job for tomorrow in daylight. 👍

I swapped the HDMI cables for the AppleTV box and SkyQ box over. The cables to the AVR were not changed so to see a Sky picture I had to select the STB (Apple) input on the AVR rather than the SAT (Sky) input.

After 15 minutes of watching Sky the TV's BBC1 Freeview picture kicked in plus the sound.

This would appear to rule out the HDMI cable and the AVR from the problem. Everything points to the Sky box. @nigea99 @and @cuke , would you agree?

I already know watching YT via the AppleTV box doesn't cause this problem. I'm now watching a DVD with the HDMI cables back in their original inputs.

26 minutes in and no problems. The only source this problem happens with is the SkyQ box. The Apple and UHD player are both fine.

It's both irritating and curious why it does this between 15-20 minutes but not thereafter.

As things stand I can live with this irritation. I'm quite relieved it's not the TV as that would be far more concerning.

t does all point to the SKY box behaving badlly but one thing that puzzles me is that the TV flips to Freewview rather than just displaying a 'No signal' or similar message.

Although it won't change anything & i sreally only for my curiosity can you do a test where you start watching SKY and then after only a few minites remove the HDMI cable from the SKY box and see how the TV reacts either immediately or a fter a few mins (or both)

Needless to say this is not normal & I really don't understand why it would happen/

The fact no one else has reported this suggests it's not down to a setting in the Sky menu. I've already gone through everything. It's something unique in 32 years of having a Sky box in its various guises.

Definitely not a setting - I am thinking maybe a video chip overheating or similar casuing the video signal to drop out

It may be different to other reports of loss of signal as maybe your TV reacts differently to others

If it's an overheating problem why does it happen only the once? You'd expect the problem to persist. But from 5:45 to gone 23:00 yesterday the problem never reoccurred. Very odd.

I did have the Q box swapped some years ago as the internal power supply was making the case very hot. It was swapped for one with the external power supply so you'd think heating wouldn't be a problem

It's being doing this for a few months. Perhaps something will eventually fail.

Do Sky people read these pages? If so, any thoughts?
