Why is it that having paid Sky, I think £49 each for our Mini boxes do they say they still belong to them?

Because that's how Sky choose to market them. The fee paid is an admin/activation fee not a purchase.

They are of no use once your subscription is cancelled anyway.

They are loaned to you, the same as the main Sky Q box and must be returned as and when you cancel the whole subscription or cancel multiscreen. Failure to return means Sky will charge you a non return fee and the mini boxes still aren't yours.

Sky retaining ownership of Q hardware is clearly stated in the actual contract, but unfortunately ambiguous in the up-front terminology.
