Yes they connect to it initially to get an IP address and listen out for the Q's network broadcasts so they can discover its mesh. After that all networking is done via the Q mesh with one of the Sky devices (not necessarily the Q, is my theory) acting as the bridge to the router's network and the internet.

Hi

I left Sky broadband a few months ago when it was cheaper to go to Virgin and Sky didnt offer a deal.

However the TV was still in contract so I kept that package.

The issue is that once or twice a week the Sky Q box goes offline. On looking at the settings I can see that it is trying to connect to my neighbours Sky internet connection and so has disconnected from the Virgin connection.

This is despite obviously the Q box never having been connected to this Sky connection.

Its annoying having to reconnect to the right network constantly but more annoying is the fact that the two miniboxes dont work until I do such as have no connection to the Q box when this happens. they are both incidentally still on the right Virgin internet.

Does anyone have a solution for this please? Its really not good enough for an expensive service.

Just a couple of points @Chantal1983

The SkySSID shown in your Q boxes Network info is the Sky Q mesh generated by the boxes themselves and not your Neighbours Network.

Secondly Minis do not connect to your Virgin Network they get their Network connection through the main Q box.
