Thanks

ill double check, but sure it was a hotspot setting on the main Q box, I had to enter hub password twice to get it on, I'd have thought as it was Sky hub I wouldn't have needed to, I assumed it was meant to be on but was off.

Because of where the minis are I've always used them to boost the WIFI in the remote rooms (one is a garden bar) all been fine, albeit they always maxed out at 80mb when I was expecting the faster connection (probably compounded by the Ethernet data transfer or the minis are only capable of giving out 80mb?), but since this issue I'm getting 40-45 at best from the minis, which in itself is fine but curious why it's dropped, pretty sure it's linked to the same problem.

I'll have another play tomorrow, but when I got it working I unplugged the extra Ethernet I'd run between Q and hub and it all failed again.

Thanks Chris

Hi

I have Sky Q, 3 x mini boxes and 1gb Sky broadband.

For ages I have had the router in the lounge with the Sky Q box (no Ethernet between Sky Q and hub), off the back of the hub I have Ethernet to a 5 port switch, from that switch it runs a sky mini box with a short cable connected, it struggled due to distance between boxes so ran Ethernet, I also run my sons pc off the 5 port, my sons Xbox (seperate room) and then run another Ethernet cable onto anotjer 5 port switch which two other minis and a pc, those two are remote from the house (garden bar and his room in the garage).

This set up has worked ok for years, have the odd issue which is normally sorted by rebooting main box and or sky hub.

last week we lost connection between boxes, and no WIFI in those rooms, I've rebooted all the boxes which has made no difference, the only way I can get it to work at the moment is with an Ethernet between Sky Q and hub across the floor.

In the main menu I set WIFI hotspots to on which was off, never touched it but presumed it should be on.
Although it works, I have intermittent sound drop outs on the mini boxes and the WIFI is only putting out around 45-50mb on a speed test which used to be always around 80, Ethernet connected PC's are still getting around 4-500mb and have worked fine.

i am convinced there is a fault with either the main box or the hub, this set up has worked flawlessly for years.

Ive booked sky engineer, but just concerned I will get fobbed off that my installation won't work (when it has done for ages)

Other than trying a full factory reset, wondered if anyone else has any ideas what could have caused it?

Hi @Chris+Gilroy

One observation.

There is no Hot Spot setting on Q boxes when using Sky Broadband.

If the WiFi is switched on in the Q boxes then hotspots are automatic as it is the Sky Mesh same as a normal Sky router.

On third Party Broadband there is an option in the main Q box to use Hotspots.

Suspect you are referring to the Q box WiFi and not hotspots which are one and the same on Sky Broadband. Ie turning off the Q box WiFi means they will no longer act as Hotspots.

On Sky broadband you can use a mixture of WiFi and/or Ethernet.

On 3rd party broadband if you want to use Ethernet between mini and router then all Q boxes need to be Ethernet to the router. This may also be the case if you have a Sky Max router as these function like 3rd party routers.

When on Sky Broadband (with non Max router) and minis are connected by Ethernet it can be best to turn of the mini WiFi. This should give a more definitive Ethernet connection.

As I said thes function like 3rd party routers.

So you would need all boxes on Ethernet to the router.

If I drop the Ethernet the WIFI drops in and out, it's even disconnecting to my phone, I've done a hard reset on the Q hub and it's made no difference.

as it's dropping to my phone I'm convinced it's a fault with the Q hub, and by connecting it via Ethernet and enabling hotspots it got around the issue.

Interestingly since I turned hotspots off I can't now find it again to re enable.
