Moving Sky Q main box upstairs

I have cables from a previous Sky + set up in a room upstairs. The cables are still connected to the dish. I moved my main Sky Q box upstairs and connected it to the cables however it says there is no satelite signal. Is there a fix for this? Is it possible that the cable upstairs is not live?

Hi @Ailieme If it is possible upload a picture of your Dish clearly showing the connections to the LNB. If the upstairs is still connected then the cables will be connected to the Standard part of the Hybrid LNB. Sky Q requires to be connected to the Wideband part. A picture will tell us everything.

hi @Ailieme

As @MightyQuinn has indicated SKY Q uses a different type of LNB (the electronic bit on the dish) to the old SKy +/HD boxes

The old cable will either be disconnected or (less likely) be connected to the 'universal' ports of a Hybrid LNB (A Hybrid LNB has 2 'wideband' ports for use with SKY Q and 2 or more 'Universal' ports suitable for SKY HD & Freesat)

Either way provided the Dish end of the old cables reach the LNB then these can probably be switched so that they are attached to the connections that work with SKY Q

hi @Ailieme

It seems you do not have a Hybrid LNB but a standard Wideband LNB

Whilst we can see both sets of cable going to the dish, unfortunately, it is difficult for us to tell if the other room cables are long enough to change over - it may be possible but not easy to say

Hi @Ailieme Thanks for the photos. This tells us your upstairs cables do not connect to anything and you only have a wide band LNB. To move your box upstairs, you would need to pay Sky to move it.

yes - the cables and connectors are the same - they secrew on like they do on the back of the box

As I say it will depend whether the cable will still reach & whether they still have connectors attached.

If the other room cables are long enough but don't have connectors then there are some good videos on Youtube explaining how to do that (F-type connector)

Remember that it's crucial not to disturb the dish alignment if swapping cables.

Also be aware that the pair connected to the Sky box carries a small electrical current if the box is left plugged into the mains socket: this can be an unpleasant thing to discover when standing on a ladder.

Thanks. Good advice. On closer examination the cables from the upstairs room have been cut. So decided not to take any risks on ladders or roof of extension. Will either call Sky or might move to Stream. Cheers.

You could also consider getting a quote from a local installer: it's about a 15 minute job.

Researching Stream is advisable, particularly if you value recording from Q or don't want the additional latency of online viewing (for live Sports as an example)
