Why can I not access the BBC 1 text button on sky Q. There's nowhere within this crazy system to check horse racing results. You can even download an app for this. Extremely frustrating. I tried replacing the Q with my old HD box but good old sky have even put a stop to that. It's really poor.

The BBC Text service is being phased out. Now it's only available on older devices with no internet connection.

@Desmondo1 as @xenon81 says you used to be able to use the red button as you could on the HD+ box to get BBC text. a few years ago the BBC were changing this process so when you pressed the red button you got an internet based system. The BBC rolled this out on Sky Q but soon after the public complained about this change and the BBC decided to stop the roll out unfortunately they did not roll back the platforms they had already changed so now Sky Q is stuck with the new BBC red button insteads of the old system.

Afraid nothing Sky can do about it

Any ideas on easy alternatives for this for my husband who does not have a smart phone?

Sky Q installed today and he's not a happy bunny with lots of stuff we don't need and the omission of something he uses a lot.

Same has happened to us. No racing results on text on the Sports app or news. Sky should inform customers of this before they sign up for Sky Q!

Given how much gambling gets pushed on Sky advertising I'm surprised they don't have this but I guess they assume everyone is using phone apps for it now so there's no point investing in developing something.

Hi had Sky Q installed today to replace my old Sky+ box before I read these complaints. As someone who lost some hearing two years ago I rely on BBC Teletext to obtain a quick visual update on news Shocked to not find it on Sky Q. Plus why I am not able to find a default setting for Subtitles across all programming instead of having to set it for individual programmes ? Deaf people are deaf all the time not on a programme by programme basis. Sort this out BBC/Sky or be accused of penalising a significant section of society.

The Global setting for Subtitles is in

Home ~ Settings ~ Accessibility.

Turn it on here and it will be on for all Channels where Subtitles are Available

Hi @Stiggsy Use the sidebar (...) for News etc. and simply press the voice buton and say "Subtitles On". You can also use the Accessibility options to turn on Subtitles by default.

Hi @oldfella and @MightyQuinn thank you for your help. I am ok now with subtitles thank you but the sidebar for news falls well short of a text based news summary from the BBC. They continued the service because of the protest against closing it from the deaf community and Sky Q should access it. Remain disappointed until solution found.

@Stiggsy Afraid the problem with the red button is down to the BBC they changed the service on Sky Q to the service they wanted to bring in and as you rightly say they then changed their mind about the new service but the BBC have never returned the service on Sky Q to the old text based service i'm afraid

You could try complaining to the BBC to see what they say

Just been made to change to Sky Q as a neighbours tree was obscuring my signal and they would not simply move the aerial unless I changed. Also had to wait two weeks without watchable HD before they would attend. Could not find BBC teletext so logged on and have found I have not got it. Have used it 40 years and even in its modern limited version still my main way of getting news, football/ cricket fixtures and results and horse racing results. I am going to have to consider leaving Sky and see if there is anyway I can get it back. Also, while I am moaning, paid for a Sky insurance policy for ywears and when tried to use it said they no longer covered my equiptment. Still took the money every month though and have again this week even though I cancelled.

That will be Sky Protect, operated by Domestic and General Insurance. They will cover Sky Q equipment if you think you need it but you'd have to change your cover from your old Sky+ policy. If you think the cancellation hasn't gone through you'll need to contact D&G.

The BBC 'Connected Red Button' service in Q is the version they wanted everyone to use, before being forced to backtrack when challenged on accessibility grounds. You'll find increasingly few devices will support the previous 'Interactive Text' version, which is more than antique.

As you've found out Sky no longer support Sky+. In all likelihood they won't support Q either once the satellites are decommissioned - the move to Internet-based TV is on the march I'm afraid.
