Morning,

Am on the cusp of renegotiating my Sky contract in the coming weeks, which would potentially see us leaving our trusty Sky HD boxes behind, and to migrate across to Sky Q.

But in our family we've always adopted a"if it ain't broke, then why fix it approach"and judging by the shear amount of technial problem posts that are peppering the Sky Q forum in here,it seems as if the HD boxes are at the very least, far more reliable and less problematic.,than the newer Sky Q technology.

In fact thats what @oj01 was saying during the week, via a different subject matte

But hey,what do I know!

"Do you guys have any advice, especially from a technical point of view?"

Thanks in advance.

Jon.

One thing to bear in mind is that forums like here tend to only get posts regarding problems & the numbers of SKY Q boxes are significant.

I have to admit that I don't think that Q are quite as rock solid as the older SKY HD boxes but that doesn't meean they are poor.

I think you may wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

I have had Sky Q from almost when it was released my current Q box I was given in 2017 as a trial box, my previous box I also had no problems with.

I took Sky Q in late 2016 and then got a Sky Q 2 tb hdr capable trials box as mentioned above in 2017.

Have been using that since.
Not had any problems with it, maybe a few box force reboots over the time, mainly around some software updates needing a wake up.

Be honest, Sky Q is a pretty stable platform now.

Until I got Sky fibre (Sky Ultrafast+ 500 Mbps) summer last year I always used it with Sky dsl broadband 75/20 Mbps and have always used it on wifi with a Sky main box and mini on different floors.

Have not had one problem over all those years with that and did make good use of the Sky Q hotspot mesh to push the signal around the far edges of the house/ garden for other devices to use.

Since I have moved to fibre, I turned off the 2.4ghz hotspots and just use the 5 ghz wifi so the boxes talk to each other and the Sky router. Once again it has been faultless.

Of course if you want and have Ethernet connections close to the boxes, it's worth using that.

Before Sky Q I had Sky and Sky+ hd in its many forms from when Sky fist started. I never had a box failure with all those boxes either,, but did for the last decade trial the Sky+ variants software with Sky till I got Sky Q and did a few software glitches with some of that trial code, but minimal and was part of the trial testing anyway to find such things.

Perhaps, if a lot of recording these days is not so important to you ( you can still cloud record some content and playlist all other content) may be worth having a look at Sky Stream, the next Sky product on from Sky Q.

Although we do not know the actual date yet, Sky Q and satellite tv delivery will probably start to be phased out towards the end of this decade, that could be only four or five years away.

I have loved my recording capability on Sky, but of late I'm not really recording anywhere near as much as I did a few years ago, mostly these days just around live sport, that I often record but do mostly also watch live. I am currently looking at moving to Sky Stream and probably will do in the next month or so.

Note that Sky no longer permits reversion to Sky+ if you don't like the change: you can cancel within the 'cooling-off' period, but wouldn't then be able to get a subscription on the old hardware.
