Colleagues, I am new to this game so please bear with me. I have been offered a free upgrade from Sky+ to Sky Q. Apparently Sky have to make alterations to the satellite dish. My problem is that the dish is a communal dish owned by the local authority. I am assuming I need permission from the authority before Sky can touch it. Does anyone have any experience of this please? Robert

If you communal dish does not have the ability to handle Sky Q then the you'll need to ask the people who manage the dish as Sky don;t touch communal equipment

Annie. Not sure if I have replied already but just to say thanks for your reply, very helpful, I will get in contact with the local authority and Sky to see if the dish is compatible with Sky Q. Regards. Robert

hi @ROBERTSTINTON

It is different for communal Systems

They don't change the LNB (the electronic bit on the dish) like they do with individual dishes.

For communal systems the LNBs already supply all the necessary signals for each band & polarity to the communal system distribution systems

For these systems it is a question of whether the signal strength is good enough (it needs to be very slightly higher for Q) & whether the distribution system can respond to the dSCR commands made from the SKY Q box

Some newer systems can already work with SKY Q

Older systems can, usually, be adapted using a small 'adapter' that SKY will fit if needed - these are usually placed in the distribution cupboards for your apartment - this the permission you will need. It will then depend whether the signals are good enough and whether there is room & power in the cupboard for the adapter - although sometimes the power needed by the adapter can be supplied by a 'power inserter' from your apartment

I am afraid that is the limit of my knoweldge - if you have further specific technical questions I will tag our kind expert @Godfrey
