Did you use a third party QR code scanner app or did you just use the camera on your phone?

There are some unscrupulous QR code scanner apps which are known to be dodgy and redirect you to scam sites.

There are a lot of fake QR scanner apps which direct the user to something else rather than the intended service. If there is a web address or any other options on screen I would try that rather than the QR code.

As @Jones_The_Cat indicates, it's the QR app carrying out that redirect rather than anything to do with Sky.

I saw the QR app my wife had downloaded on her phone do the same thing last week (though to a different subscription service) when she was trying to use an 'order and pay at table' facility in a restaurant.

Unfortunately even previously legitimate apps can start doing this if they change ownership.

To be fair, they are 'real' QR apps, but run by bad people ; )

Unfortunately I suspect you'll have to cancel the payment method with your bank.

Any business recruiting subscriptions this way probably isn't exactly scrupulous about customer service.

And delete the app. You don't need it. All Android and iOS phones can scan QRs direct from the camera

I note there is an email address near the bottom of this page but given they appear to require a physical letter I wouldn't hold out much hope that way.

Far from all Android, though: native QR only arrived with v13 in 2022, largely because so many dodgy apps had emerged.

Unless I'm mistaken, QR code readers have been available in Android from V8 onwards? ie Google lens preinstalled on Motorola G9... Downloading another app is unneccessary, and potentially hazerdous - as the above posts point out.

Surprised me too, so I checked. Frankly Google messed up bigly on this one, and continues to do so by leaving numerous questionable QR app in its Store: there's now a whole business model in offering those app creators crypto to buy ownership out from under them and then start running malicious redirects after an 'update'.

Only through Google Assistant, I think, and the user had to know it was there to access it. A manufacturer could choose to add an app in its own release, of course, but all the 'droids I have owned needed a download.
