Had seen on the internet that Alexa can also control the Sky q box when enabled in skills but after trying to set this up for over an hour I resorted to Alexa chat for help & after speaking to 3 different people over the course of another hour it turns out that it will only work in the USA, why is that? If it works over there why isn't it available here

Just some info, my Alexa has started controlling my sky q box, only found it last night so not really played with it to see what I can do but it will change channels. I only noticed because my Samsung one remote was being really temperamental controlling sky (through IR). So I reset it and went through the setup process on my TV, and then noticed it wasn't controlling sky through its IR sensor, and was using hdmi CEC or Bluetooth, so on the off chance I said "Alexa TV chanell 101" and on comes BBC 1!

It appears to be Alexa sending a command to my (Samsung) TV which in turn is sending it on to the sky box, I guess over hdmi.

Do not ask me how I did it because I haven't got a clue.

I've set up a smartthings hub this week and have done a lot of messing around with my smart devices. One thing I haven't done is set up a skill for sky.

But hey presto Alexa is controlling sky. Wierd because I wasn't even trying to achieve this.

@z0gm0n5ter is your TV connected to a Freeview Aerial - I suspect that is the channel it changed to rather via SKY as I am not aware that SKY Q can respond to commands via HDMI

No it's definitely controlling sky.

I haven't got an areial connected to the TV, only hdmi and ethernet, and the TV has never been through broadcast set up.

Update

I've uploaded a short video of this working to YouTube.

I've been racking my brains over what I was messing about with last night.

Like said I managed this by accident but it maybe something to do with me enabling the smart remote feature in the smartthings app.

I'm using a Samsung fold 5 to run the app, my TV is a 2020 Samsung and I've recently set up an aeotec hub (don't think the hub is involved but I don't know for sure). So this maybe a Samsung thing, it'd be interesting to know if anyone else gets this working.

Just checked and my TV is doing the same. I assumed because my Alexa is connect to my Samsung TV and not my Sky box that whenever I asked for anything TV channel related it would try to do it through the Samsung TV Plus but if I'm in Sky it will work. Only seems to work with channel numbers rather than names though so I best learn the numbers of my fave channels 😂😂
