Unable to connect the mini multi room box to the main sky q box, have tried connecting the usual way, and turned everything off at the plug and repeated, still not working.

What do you mean by the usual way ?

After rebooting both Q boxes did you try a Network reset on the mini exactly as follows:-

Network Reset found in mini box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions to connect by WPS to your main q box/
You will be asked to press the WPS button on the main Q box. (Not on the box as the Network reset will start the mini box WPS automatically).
