I have been reading a number of posts on this subject but I hope someone might still be able to give me a steer. Like a user who posted a couple of years ago I wish to use a mini-box in an external building which is too distant for a booster. A conversation over the phone with a Sky engineer about a year ago ended with him recommending using an Ethernet, connected to the main box and run down to my summer house. Reading this Forum shows I should have asked a few more questions. So, put simply, I want to connect a mini-box to the main Sky Q box by Ethernet while simultaneously continuing to use other mini-boxes in my house which are connected by wi-if (I can't run cables all over the house). Is this possible? A couple of older posts refer to changing settings for Ethernet connection but I could find no reference to doing this while leaving current wi-if connections undisturbed.

The key is to get the distant Mini onto the same network distribution as the main Q box and the internet router. Personally I'm not a big fan of direct ethernet connection between main and Mini box because that isn't really a legitimate network topology (apparently it works, but it bugs me ; ) : when I had Q the setup was router to ethernet switch, main Q box to ethernet switch, remote Mini to ethernet switch, other Mini on WiFi to router.

Yes it did. I had to purchase a 50 metre(!) Ethernet cable, connected to the rear of my SkyQ box and running under floorboards out of the side of my house and then down the garden to my summerhouse/games room. It is connected in there to a Mini box which connects to a new TV. I have had many friends round, mostly to watch sporting events without disturbing anyone in the house, and so this has given me a whole new option for entertaining. I have to say that I credit this approach to a Sky engineer I discussed the problem with over the telephone about 18 months ago but it took me until late last summer to install the wire (and about three days of digging and drilling, but worth it.)

As a general observation, speed from any Q television hardware used in that way is limited by the ethernet port chipset, which I believe is only 100Mbs on a Mini (and older main Q boxes). For FTTC that's not a problem because it's still faster than is possible at the router, but the Q 'mesh' (which is 2015 technology) really isn't ideal for 500Mbs and Gigabit FTTP.
