My old TV backlight has gone - I've found a 50inch Bush 4k for £269 which I'm tempted to get - will that be compatible with the sky q 1tb box? I tried an old Samsung and it couldn't get the signal

I am not sure why you coudn't get a signal on the old Samsung - SKY Q is compatible with virtually any TV with an HDMI connection.

At the price point you mention then it is extremely unlikely to be able to support HDR from SKY Q but otherwise should work

Any TV particularly if it is 4K should be acceptable for Q @1324

However the early 1 TB boxes were non UHD.

See which Q box you have

Edit

One reason why the Samsung wouldn't work would be if your Q box was set to UHD and the Samsung was not 4K compatible
