Sky is working downstais, but on second box it keeps saying I must update software but I am unable to do this

Are you sure that it is not a TV Message and not your Q box?

Have you tried using your TV remote to respond to the message?

yes message on screen says update sofware but it is not alling me

As @oldfella says that is likely to be your TV and you need to use your TV's remote (& not the SKY remote)
