I have a 646 and unfortunately only supports HDR and not HLG or Dolby Vision. For my Sky Q box I have this directly connected to TV and then ARC to Onkyo for audio.

That's a 2015-release model, which would date its specification and manufacture to before HLG was established.

I'm afraid some things need hardware too, and that box would have been produced before silicon supporting HLG was available to manufacturers..

The only significant addition appears to be DTS:X

Please note I'm not suggesting you apply a more recent version to your box: it's up to you to decide if you wish to risk that.

A firmware update won't work as it is a hardware limitation I believe

Thank you to all posters and replies. I have spent a fortune trying to modify my system and now I need to change the amp. Sky comes into my TV through an extender and accomodates Control4. Biggest waste of money ever! I will look at removing it all and putting all my gear in the living room with direct connections. Thanks again.

How could I bypass the amp for sky video but connect for audio?

To be fair, a 2015 AVR has had a good innings, and might still get some interest on eBay.

This is what was recommended by the "smart home" installers. They also supplied me, at great cost, extenders, upgraded DVD and other add ons. Anything I buy new needs to be programmed by them to operate the Control4 remote. This is also very expensive. Regarding your "good innings", I expect an amp to do 20 years plus. I have a Kenwood bought in 1999 and a Creek, still going perfectly after 21 years. It's only eight years old! Thanks again anyway.

Twenty years from now, possibly (although 8K support would be an issue in most cases), but good luck finding an AVR half that age which supports any flavour of HDR: it just wasn't a thing a decade ago.

Perhaps worth considering that HDR isn't 'amp' functionality: it's a relatively recent family of video industry digital data standards. The oldest electronic amplifiers from more than a century back can still make analogue audio louder, but they don't tend to work so well with passing UHD to a television set.

If the AVR is ARC capable (and the television capable of audio passthrough) then Q to TV over HDMI plus TV ARC HDMI to AVR may be viable.

Obviously I understand that an ancient AVR wont receive HLG. I only wish I had been informed by the installers before I spent £500+ on a HDR extender that does support HLG, through an amp that doesn't!
