Sky stream and Sky Q

So, I live in an apartment in a separate building to the main house. We had two sky+ boxes for years and years with no problems whatsoever.

We switched to Sky Q and tried the multi room box, however this didn't work, the buildings are too far apart it never worked for more than 2 minutes before losing connection to the main box (even after sky put a booster box in place)

Since then I've had no sky because it's not worked. I would happily take out another subscription to watch sky but apparently this isn't allowed.

I would have thought the sky stream, that runs off WiFi would be fine to have multiple subscriptions per address.

Why can't I do this? It doesn't make sense.

We don't know if there are any technical reasons within the SKY systems or whether it is just a policy decision for being unable to have the 2 systems on the same account.

It has, otherwise, been a long standing SKY policy not to have more than one account per postal address

Edit : I am guessing you were unable to use ethernet beteween th ebuildings to get the mini to work

With "stream" you don't need two accounts. If you change to stream you can have (for a cost) up to 4 (at least) boxes and so long as your home Wifi is adequate at the location you want the boxes then there should be no problem as they do not link in the same manner as Q boxes and work independently. So if you take this route make sure you have fast and reliable WiFi at everywhere you want boxes. I have 66Mbps and you probably need at least 35Mbps for "stream".

The problem is, the main house still wants the main Sky Q box because of the recording capabilities.

My complaint is, they offer a product that solves my problems but won't allow me to take out another subscription or even add to my current one and there's no logical reason why that is 🤦

If you want recording capability the only way, not easy, is to get the post office to recognise the two buildings as separate postal addresses something like 12 & 12A. Then you can set up two accounts.

Then wait for two Council Tax bills. That's a rather expensive way to get Recordings ; )

Yes, unfortunately ethernet cable didn't work. Sky engineers set it up but unfortunately still didn't work

They didn't do it right (or the ethernet cable was duff). I ran a Q Mini off the end of an ethernet distribution for years.

unless the main house is in an agreement to have Sky Stream the other option available is to have Sky Go installed on a games console connected to a tv and a decent internet connection or the one provided by @bob1234

If Sky is not the broadband provider then the Ethernet cable needs to go between the main and mini box.

Sky go isn't suitable for what I want.

The only thing I want to do is watch Sky F1. I don't always get chance to watch it live.

Nope, just has to be on the same LAN. Mine was BT Hub to ethernet switch, which had both main Q box and Mini Q box on different ports.

Yes that works so long as both boxes are physically connected to the same place, however if the main box is connected by WiFi the cable needs to be box to box.

I wonder if when connected by Sky they went mini to router without having the main box connected there as well.

All the above assumes that Sky is not the broadband provider, if it is you can connect it almost any way.

Kind of. I had a product that worked perfectly for 10+ years. I "upgraded" to a product way worse and more expensive 😂 Can't go back, can't use a simple fix that would actually pay Sky even more money and there's no logical reason why not.
