How about a browser based Sky Go…?

I guess many of us use the HBO Max, Disney+ etc etc “apps” via a browser.

Wouldn’t it be great if Sky Go used this method too rather than as an installed application on Mac OS and Windows. Then we could even use it on the Linux Distro of our choice.

I imagine cost is the prohibiting factor here.

There was one. It died when browsers moved away from the plug-in architecture necessary to install Microsoft Silverlight.

Microsoft primarily use linux servers for their web hosting and Azure, and are a huge contributer to open source.

If you have a server in the cloud, there is a good chance it is running on linux (ubuntu, debian, RHEL, and whatever centos became). Microsoft also just released a linux distribution for Azure.

Nasa and Cern primarily use linux for their servers and dataprocessing.

But desktop-wise. Worldwide linux is about 4% of desktops with microsoft and apple spliting the rest (Apple kernal is partially BSD unix).. Desktop linux use is almost 19% in the United States.

Android phones run on the linux kernal(!).

All apps also have an equivalent linux application or a native linux version (I'm writing this on Chrome on linux, but I could be using Edge).

However linux is just not prevalent enough, on desktop, for companies with problematic software to support it.

In this case problematic means software that hooks into the microsoft kernal or is too difficult to extricate from ms dlls or is so far down the MS route that it would cost a fortune to port. The market is just not big enough for some companies to make money from porting that stuff to linux.

But for sure, there is a lot of money to be made with linux, just not for apps so much.

That seems distinctly unlikely just based on physically observable evidence of what real people actually have on desks: there's a strong suspicion it's a highly distorted figure generated by server-side AI bots and web-scrapers emulating domestic users.

The notion that 1 in 5 computers anywhere are running Linux is, I'm afraid, just a dream: that's a higher proportion of the home and office market than Apple claims to have.
