Without Sky Q Multiscreen you cannot access your Q box and are limited to using Sky Go to access Sky Online content via the internet.

I wish they told me this before getting rid of the multiroom I thought it was for the box in the boys room xx

You only need multroom if you want to access your recordings from your Sky Q box otherwise you can use the app to watch live TV, catchup and boxset content without it.
