Where is the 3D content gone?

Does Sky provide 3D content? I have a Sky Q box and can't find any 3D programs.

The only programme that cae up when I tried a voice search for 3D was a David Attenborough Nature programme.

It is vaguely possible that some films are still there but just not tagged - you would need to search for a film you want & check 'All Formats'

I know when Iooked for someone many months ago (probably over a year ago) there were only about 20 items showing.

It has, of course, been reducng as the number of people owning sets & watching 3D is reducing - TVS sets have not had 3D capability for a few years now - I upgraded from my 3D capable TV around 4 1/2 years ago (no new TVs had 3D then)

(I still have not parted with several of y 3D blu-rays for some strange reason)

It has always been niche & even for those who have 3D TVs very few actually watch it, so it is not really surprising it has become less & less available

I believe the last year 3D television sets were manufactured was 2016, and they never made the jump to UHD. There have been 3D-capable projectors since then though.

My first 4K TV did actually support 3D (one reason I got it) but eventually I switched to OLED as I found the off-axis drop off too much & missed the deep blacks of my previous Plasma (even though it was one of the best non OLEDs)

There is one (One) film available Monster Family when I looked it up a few months back.

Sadly and disappointing Sky haven't replaced anymore 3d movies.

Further more you can't even get hold of 3d films on Blu-ray in this country anymore unless it's something that's fairly old from Amazon or other retailers.

I would like to see the new Snow White film in 3d as seen it in flat 2d, there was some eye popping scenes that would have done it justice.

I was sad 3D TV's didn't take off. I enjoyed watching movies and Sky's 3D Channel a lot. I preferred watching at home to in the cinema because it was easier to see the whole screen at once at home plus you could sit at the right angle. I was gutted when my 3D TV broke down. Movies like Journey 2 The Mysterious Island, Hugo and even Yogi Bear are duller in non-3D format.

I really liked Hugo in 3D - I still enjoy the 2D blu-ray but the 3D definitely had the edge.

As much as I like Avatar now available in Dolby Vision (I watched via Disney +) I still preferred the 3D version - alas I can no longer watch it (along with a few other 3D blu-rays sitting alongside their 2D counterparts)

Avatar was definitely one of the better films to use 3D to enhance the viewing experience. Not all films benefitted from it though and the sport experiment Sky tried with football wasn't great.

One of the best uses of 3D was by the BBC in 2013 for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary story, The Day of the Doctor. To say it was made on a TV budget it used the technology better than most movies.

That was shown on my birthday in Cinemas so my family took me to see it - I actually preferred the detail/contrast on my, then, Plasma TV (needless to say one of my other 3Ds sitting alongside their 2D couterparts)

The Day of the Doctor 3D screenings were indeed excellent. I also thought the 2013 movie Gravity was one of the best uses of the technology. It was the most immersed I've ever felt in a 3D film. Nothing since has ever done that.

In almost every article about the fall of 3-D TV, the blame was laid on the 3-D glasses we had to wear. I have never understood why this was. I never had an issue with them; I was quite happy to put them on. It's not like we were asked to wear a helmet or a large headset. Oh yeah, a large headset, something like a VR headset that nobody was complaining about. People were quite happy to strap one of those on, but not a pair of lightweight glasses. Makes no sense.

I loved my 3-D TV, which I had before 4K TV was a thing. I can still remember my reaction when I put it on & loaded a 3-D Blu-ray film onto it, & I wasn't new to 3-D films by any means, having seen plenty over the years at the cinema. It was a great experience & I still miss it. I had quite a good collection of 3-D content, not only films but specialist documentaries as well.

I'm sure there used to be talk of being able to watch 3-D content on a TV without the need for 3-D glasses, but that never came to anything.

Did any of you hate the 3-D glasses? If so, why?

@Mr+Ripley As I already have glasses to correct my vision, 3-D glasses are a pain as are VR headsets, most of these devices expect their user to have either good eyesight or contact lenses 😞

Although not perfect by any means I had no problem with the 3D glasses (over my ordinary glasses) - apart from the fact that I had Panasonic TVs that needed active glases and they would soon go through the button batteries but fortunately I also got some rechargeable ones 🙂

That said, part of me wonders if that was partly I was prepared to put up with them to be able to watch the 3D content

My old 3D TV was the passive version where you could just use the glasses you got at the cinema. They were far more comfortable to wear than the ones that came with the TV.

I far enjoyed the experience of watching 3D on a TV at home than at the cinema. I was sad when my TV broke down because manufacturing of the TV's had stopped by then. I've resold almost all the 3D Blu-ray's I had. The 3D Blu-ray player I got at the same time as the TV is still going strong!

I figured someone would reply about how 3-D glasses were awkward to wear if you already wore regular glasses ( I'm not having a go at you here @Annie+UK ), but then @nigea99 states that he managed okay. So it can be done.

@Mr+Ripley Why should one have to put up with "slightly uncomfortable", when I pay for something I don't want to compromise my comfort, for me 3-D was a gimmick to allow hardware manufacturers to charge more for their TVs etc... or cinema to increase their ticket prices
