I'm currently in the process of switching back to sky for my broad band, open reach are coming out this week and then a engineer from sky at a later date. Do I need the sky engineer? Will he have more to do than just connect the new equipment?

That's typically because Openreach (or a subcontractor) is going to do the external pole/duct work up to the CSP enclosure, and then the Sky employee will be running the interior optical pigtail, carrying out the fusion-splice procedure and installing the ONT.
