Hi i got a text from sky which states the following...

The broadband network in your area is being upgraded as part of the national copper switch off. We're offering this switch to part fibre-sky broadband superfast at no extra cost and with no change to your broadband contract or minimum term-ensuring no disruption to your current broadband and talk service.

An engineer visit is not required, so to get started, click "yes" and we'll be in touch with a provisional date for your switch to take place. After your order has been placed, we will folow up with more information.

If you have a care alarm or your household does not have access to a mobile phone that you can use to call emergency services, please DO NOT respond as this migration might not be suitable for you.

For more information, search "upcoming changes to your broadband & talk service" on sky help

So first is this text legit? ( i assume yes because i have seen mention of similar on the forum and i also looked online about the upcoming changes and it is mentioned there)

The next thing is i already have sky broadband superfast but this text reads as though they are giving me something new/for free/different to what i already have when it looks in reality its not touching my broadband package at all.I cant get full fibre where i live so surely this "switch" has nothing to do with my internet connection/broadband?

I have a landline so does this switch in my area mean that if i do nothing, the landline will stop working? There is no date in the message to say the current setup will be switched off by such and such a date so what happens if i do nothing and dont respond?

If it is neccessary that i must respond and change to part fibre, then why does it mention that i should not respond if i dont have an alternative to contact emergency services?Surely this must mean that my landline will still work in future evn if i dont switch?Or will they just cut me off?

Its as clear as mud and some clarification would be appreciated, thank you.

The next thing is i already have sky broadband superfast but this text reads as though they are giving me something new/for free/different to what i already have when it looks in reality its not touching my broadband package at all.I cant get full fibre where i live so surely this "switch" has nothing to do with my internet connection/broadband? It's gthe Talk Landline side of the service that is switching to VOIP using either your existing Hub (if compatible) or providing a new hub, the phone will instead plug into the UK Phone port on the hub rather than your master socket.

Yes you need to reply for it to happen otherwise the talk service may just end.

It is poorly worded but what Sky are suggesting is switching the voice line from the old analogue system wherecyhe phone plugged into a wall socket to the replacement digital voice service where the phone plugs into your Sky hub. There is no change yo your broadband as such as your home has not been passed by full fibre.Openreach are turning off the analogue phone system early in 2027 so if the change is not made you lose the landline.

Given your new line requires the hub to be powered and connected there are issues around contacting emergency services during a power cut. Most everyone has a mobile these days so this isnt a huge issue.

Thanks for the replies people and as i thought, everything you both said i already knew but good to have more confirmation.

The only part i dont understand is if this is getting switched off,why isnt there a date telling me this and why is it giving me the option to not respond and actively telling me DO NOT respond (they even put it in capital letters) if i dont have an alternative way to contact emergency services? If i didnt respond and make the switch, what happens? The way the text reads is that my current set up will still work. There is no mention or hint that it will stop working and my landline will be dead,no date saying this will happen, nothing? But it gives me the option to not do anything. If this is the case, then why give me this option to continue as i am now?

Googling the number some people are saying its a scam number and others say its legit

The header on the account is the sky logo and says its sky business account and looks legit, but so do a lot of scam messages.

I dont want to click on anything incase its not actually from sky

I dont want to end up saying yes and having no landline

They are older phones but nothing wrong with them so i looked on the manufacturers website but cant find if they are compatible or not

If not does this mean i have to go and buy new handsets?Or do sky provide this as per ofcom here https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-and-broadband/landline-phones/future-of-landline-calls

Almost all corded analogue handsets and DECT base stations are compatible.

Sky doesn't provide any telephone hardware.

Apparently it's possible (but tortuous) to obtain an Uninterruptible Power Supply unit for local battery backup under particular circumstances.
